The Rumor Mill

March 8, 2004 (Update 3)
The Washington Post reported late Monday night that the Stars interest in Capitals defenseman Brendan Witt may have dropped off after Dallas acquired Chris Therien from Philadelphia Monday.

The Post also reported that the Stars are one of the teams that continue to express interest in Caps forward Mike Grier.
March 8, 2004 (Update 2)
Bob McKenzie of TSN.ca reports that the Stars may be the front runners for Rangers left wing Martin Rucinsky.

Stars GM Doug Armstrong told the Dallas Morning News that he may be looking to add another defenseman even in light of the deal with Philadelphia for Chris Therien.
March 8, 2004
Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports that Stars GM Doug Armstrong may stand pat at Tuesday's trade deadline because the Stars are pleased with what they are seeing in recently signed Shayne Corson.

"I think we're seeing parts of his game that we anticipated would be there," Armstrong told the Morning News after Sunday's game in which Corson had a goal, an assist and a fight. "That's the Shayne Corson I remember. He had a good game."

Heika reports the Stars could still add a player before the deadline but that it probably won't be a big name player.

Larry Brooks of the New York Post reports that the Stars are one of the teams interested in Rangers defenseman Greg de Vries, who is said to be on the trading block.

During yesterday's ESPN broadcast, Bill Clement reported that Martin Rucinsky of the Rangers and Slava Kozlov of the Thrashers could be players the Stars might try to land.

Newsday reported that the Stars offered Steve Ott and a package of draft picks to the Rangers for defenseman Brian Leetch, who ended up going to Toronto.
March 7, 2004
The Toronto Sun reports the Stars could be interested in Jeff O'Neill and Sean Hill, who are being offered as a package deal by the Carolina Hurricanes. Bruce Garrioch of The Ottawa Sun reports the Stars could be shopping defenseman Richard Matvichuk.

The Dallas Morning News reports the Stars could be looking for a gritty winger and/or a puck moving defenseman before Tuesday's deadline. Richard Durrett listed the following players as possibilities: D Lyle Odelein, D Vitaly Vishnevski, F Martin Rucinsky, D Alexei Zhitnik, D Ruslan Salei, D Brendan Witt, F Mike Grier and F Miroslav Satan.
March 4, 2004
The Washington Post reported again today that the Stars are among the teams trying to land Capitals defenseman Brendan Witt.
March 3, 2004
The Washington Post reports that talks continue between the Stars and Capitals on a deal for defensemen Brendan Witt. The Post reports the Stars are one of several teams trying to land the rugged defenseman. The Post also reports that the Stars are one of the teams that continues to show an interest in Washington forward Mike Grier.

The Ottaw Sun reports that the Stars, Devils, Leafs, Bruins and Canucks have made a pitch for Rangers defenseman Brian Leetch.

The Edmonton Sun reported earlier this week that the Stars are rumored to have an interest in Oilers defenseman Jason Smith.
February 29, 2004 (Update 2)
Tim Panaccio of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Sunday that the Flyers and the Stars are the two teams showing the most interest in Rangers defenseman Brian Leetch.
February 29, 2004
The Toronto Star lists the Stars as one of several teams with a serious interest in Rangers defenseman Brian Leetch. The Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers, New Jersey Devils and Los Angeles Kings are said to be the other suitors.

Meanwhile, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the Stars don't want to part with any of their top young players. Brenden Morrow, Steve Ott, Trevor Daley and John Erskine are not players the Stars want to move in a trade before next week's deadline.

"We do have a veteran team, but we have to keep our eye on the future. They all exemplify what we want," Stars GM Doug Armstrong told the Star-Telegram.
February 27, 2004
The Dallas Morning News reported today that the Stars continue to scout the Washington Capitals. Defenseman Brendan Witt and forward Mike Grier are said to be two guys that interest the Stars. Witt said he wouldn't mind playing in Dallas.

"If the team decides to go in a younger direction and I'm not wanted here, then I'd be more than happy to go to a team like Dallas or New Jersey," Witt told the Washington Post.
February 26, 2004
Richard Durrett of the Dallas Morning News reported Thursday that the Stars "still could be in the market for a scoring left wing and a puck-moving, left-handed defenseman with size."

Durrett mentioned Sergei Gonchar, Brendan Witt and Brian Leetch as possibilities. Stars GM Doug Armstrong told the Morning News that he is not looking to just add a player, but the right player.

"You want to try and get someone who can help the team, but at a specific spot," Armstrong told the News. "Part of it is chemistry and knowing if that player can fit in. You don't want to try and put a square peg in a round hole. There has to be a need so that you're not just bringing in players."

Meanwhile, Mike Heika of the Morning News reports what ever the Stars do they'll be looking ahead to next season. Heika speculates the Stars would like to keep their payroll for next season below $50 million in anticipation of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

He said players like "Robert Lang ($5 million for three more years) and Jeff O'Neill ($3 million for two more years) " probably aren't options among forwards because of their heft salaries. He did suggest that the Stars could take on defenseman Brian Leetch's $6.4 million salary next season because four of the Stars' current defensemen -- Richard Matvichuk, Teppo Numminen, Don Sweeney and Jon Klemm -- will be unrestricted free agents after this season.

He said dealing with the Capitals for either Sergei Gonchar or Brenden Witt could be tough because the Caps aren't in need of the Stars' best trade bait -- goaltending prospects.

Heika said the Stars have scouted Minnesota and suggested defenseman Brad Bombardir and left wing Andrew Brunette could be possibilities. So could ex-Stars forward Martin Rucinsky of the Rangers.
February 25, 2004
Stars owner Tom Hicks told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in Wednesday's edition that the Stars will be buyers in the NHL trade market, and he added GM Doug Armstrong could pull the trigger on a deal soon.

"We're going to be buyers," Hicks told the Star-Telegram. "Doug Armstrong was working on several things. He wants to do it sooner than later."

The Star-Telegram once again mentioned Washington defensemen Sergei Gonchar and Brendan Witt as possibilities. The Washington Post has also reported the Stars have an interest in Witt.

Meanwhile, both the New York and Daily News report that Stars director of scouting Doug Overton has been at the last three New York Rangers games. Both papers suggested the Stars could be interested in defenseman Brian Leetch.
February 24, 2004
Mac Engel of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the Stars have been scouting the Washington Capitals. Engel says the Stars are in the market for a defenseman and Washington's Sergei Gonchar and Brendan Witt are possibilities, with Witt being the more realistic candidate.

"I'm not going into specifics; you can throw a dart and it might hit," Stars general manager Doug Armstrong told the Star-Telegram. "We have guys at all the games. We are at all the games of the teams that might be in the market to move players."

Engel also mentioned Caps forwards Mike Grier and Dainius Zubrus as also being available. The Caps are apparently looking for prospects, but not a goaltending prospect, which is something the Stars are willing to offer. Engel said Brenden Morrow, Steve Ott and Trevor Daley are not players the Stars want to give up.

Engel also reported the Stars have scouted Rangers defenseman Brian Leetch, but added that the Stars acquiring the gifted blueliner is probably unrealistic.
February 17, 2004
Stars GM Doug Armstrong would not say whether his team is interested in Shayne Corson, who is contemplating a comeback to the NHL. But Armstrong did tell the Dallas Morning News Monday: "We're always looking for players that can improve our team." Corson's agent told the News that two or three teams were interested in Corson, but he wouldn't say if the Stars were one of those teams.

This is the latest on the Shayne Corson deal from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: "There has been interest from four teams in free-agent F Shayne Corson, but it's likely he'll end up in the Western Conference. Although Eastern Conference teams Philadelphia and Montreal have both made inquiries, the betting money is Corson will end up with Dallas."
February 15, 2004
There are apparently a few teams intersted in ex-Toronto Maple Leaf Shayne Corson and one of those teams is said to be the Dallas Stars. It's not a done deal, but someone in the know tells Andrew's it is a " pretty likely possibility real soon."

The 37-year-old Corson "resigned" from the Maple Leafs during last season's playoffs because he was frustrated with his diminshing role with the team. He was expected to retire but apparently is looking to come back to make a playoff run.

Sportsnet.ca reports that Corson is still trying to make up his mind on whether he wants to return to the NHL. He is expected to make his decision in the next couple days.

The Toronto Star reports that Corson would like to remain in the Eastern Conference and that Philadelphia is said to be a possibility.

Meanwhile, Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports the Boston Bruins are considering dealing Brian Rolston to Dallas for Jason Arnott. But Al Strachan of the Toronto Sun says the Stars have quit trying to deal Arnott and Richard Mativchuk because of the team's improved play recently.
February 8, 2004
Jim Reeves of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Sunday that the Stars shopping list on the trade market is shrinking. Reeves said the Stars had an interest in Washington's Mike Grier and Brendan Witt. Apparently those are two players Washington wants to keep around.

Reeves also reports that most teams are asking for Brenden Morrow, Trevor Daley or Steve Ott. Stars GM Doug Armstrong doesn't want to go there. He adds the Stars would be willing to part with one of their goaltending prospects, but most teams aren't interested because they are set as far as goalie prospects.

In this morning's Ottawa Sun, Bruce Garrioch reports that the Stars are one of the teams interested in Carolina defenseman Bob Bob Boughner, who is currently nursing a knee injury.
February 7, 2004
Washington's Robert Lang told the Washington Post Saturday that he expects to be traded before the March 9 deadline. He told the Post that Dallas is one place he wouldn't mind playing.

"I would like to go somewhere good, where you have a good chance to win a Cup. Detroit, Dallas," Lang told the Post.

There was also a report earlier this week from Ted Montgomery of USA Today that said the Stars had entered the bidding for Chicago's Alexei Zhamnov.
February 5. 2004
Not so much a rumor but here is some speculation. Mike Heika and Richard Durrett of the Dallas Morning News took an in depth look at the Stars trade situation in Thursday's edition. They list the Stars needs as "a physical forward who can score goals (preferably a left winger) and a physical defenseman who can strike fear at the blue line (preferably a left shot)."

They list secondary needs as "a left-handed point on the power play, a faceoff specialist and a checking-line center." They also mentioned the possibility of a proven veteran as a backup for goalie Marty Turco.

The pair said toughness is the Stars biggest need.

Among the possibilities they listed were forwards Ryan Smyth (Edmonton), Jeff Cowan (Atlanta), Andrew Brunette (Minnesota), and Brian Rolston (Boston).

They listed defensemen Sergei Gonchar (Washington), Luke Richardson (Columbus), Bob Bougner (Carolina) and Alexei Zhitnik (Buffalo) as possibilities.

The goaltending possibilities were Sean Burke (Phoenix), Felix Potvin (Boston), Olaf Kolzig (Washington), Tommy Salo (Edmonton) and Manny Fernandez (Minnesota).

They players they listed as possible trade bait were "goalie prospects Jason Bacashihua, Dan Ellis, Mike Smith or Tobias Stephan and checking line prospects Niko Kapanen, Antti Miettinen, Mathias Tjarnqvist, Yared Hagos or Jussi Jokinen." They also listed Jason Arnott as a possibility.
February 4, 2004
Not many specifics, but the Washington Post reported Wednesday that the Stars are one of several teams expressing an interest in some of the Capitals top players.Previous rumors have suggested that the Stars could be interested in Brendan Witt or Sergei Gonchar and forward Robert Lang.
February 2, 2004
Not really a rumor, but a statement of fact. The Stars are poised to shop around for some help to make a good playoff run. Mac Engel of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the Stars will be buyers in the trade market.

Stars GM Doug Armstrong told Engel that instead of dumping talent because the team was underachieving, he can different approach with other general managers.

"Now, I can say, 'If you decide to go into a different direction, keep me in mind,' " Armstrong told the Star-Telegram.

Armstrong said he was unlikely to give up some of his top young young players like Brenden Morrow, Steve Ott and Trevor Daley.

Engel speculated the Stars could move one of their goaltending prospects.

Engel added the Stars could be in the market for a bruising winger and a left-handed shot defenseman to help boost the Stars' power play.

"I don't know if it's a power-play specialist, but, whoever we bring in, if we do, has to play in a five-on-five, too," Armstrong told Engel.

The defenseman Engels listed as possible targets are Buffalo's Alexei Zhitnik, Carolina's Bret Hedican and Anaheim's Sandis Ozolinsh.
February 1, 2004
Another rumor on the Stars today. Bruce Garrioch reports in the Ottawa Sun that the Stars could be interested in Phoenix goalie Sean Burke as a backup for Marty Turco. The Coyotes, according to Garrioch, are looking for prospects. Various other reports have the Flyers and Rangers among the teams who could be interested in Burke.
January 25, 2004
A couple of media reports -- from the Washington Post and ESPN.com -- say the Stars are one of the teams interested in Washington defenseman Sergei Gonchar. One problem though. Gonchar is expected to be out at least a month with a shoulder injury.
January 23, 2004
Mac Engel of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram offered the names of some players who could be on the Stars' shopping list before the NHL's March 9 trade deadline. Here's the list.

Forwards: Petr Bondra (Washington); Miroslav Satan (Buffalo); Jeff O'Neill (Carolina); Alexei Zhamnov (Chicago); Geoff Sanderson (Columbus); Ryan Smyth (Edmonton)

Defenseman: Jason Smith (Edmonton); Brendan Witt (Washington); Adrian Aucoin (NY Islanders)
January 22, 2004
The Washington Post reported this evening that the Stars are one of the teams that have been scouting the Capitals a lot recently. Washington players other than Jaromir Jagr who are supposedly on the block are Robert Lang, Peter Bondra, Sergei Gonchar.

There was also a report in the New Daily News this morning that the Rangers are in the market for a defenseman and the Stars' Richard Matvichuk is one of the top blue liners who might be available.
January 18, 2004
Here are some Stars related rumors from the New York Post's Larry Brooks. Writing in today's edition, Brooks says the Stars are looking for people to take Jason Arnott, Richard Matvichuk and Sergei Zubov.

Brooks writes: "[New Jersey GM Lou] Lamoriello's desire for a physical pivot who shoots right has the Dallas front office believing the Devils will inquire about Jason Arnott, though this certainly seems to be wishful thinking on the part of the Stars, who are seeking buyers not only for Arnott, but for Richard Matvichuk, and, we're now told, Sergei Zubov."
January 13, 2004
Stars GM Doug Armstrong told the Dallas Morning News in today's edition that he is not shopping any of his players.

"Part of your job is to stay plugged in and to always be aware of ways you can make your team better," Armstrong told the News. "But I believe, whether it's correct or incorrect, that there's enough talent and character in that room to get the job done."
January 11, 2004
Bruce Garrioch, writing in todays' Ottawa Sun, reports the Stars are believed to be one of the teams that have shown an interest in Islanders center Michael Peca. Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal and Carolina are the others, according to Garrioch.

There was also a Sports Ilustrated report earlier in the week that the Boston Bruins had offered Brian Rolston to the Stars in exchange for Jason Arnott.
January 5, 2004
Mac Engel of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram suggests that if Mike Modano's groin injury lingers the Stars may need to trade for a scorer. He said they may need to trade for anyway because of the team's scoring woes. Engel mentioned Washington's Robert Lang and Buffalo's Miroslav Satan as possibilities. Engel suggested the Stars may be willing to part with one of their goaltending prospects, since there are so many of them.
January 4, 2004
A report in the Ottawa Sun said the Stars have contacted the Senators about the availability of forward Daniel Alfredsson. But the report said the Senators aren't interested in dealing their captain. They are hoping to get him signed to an extension before he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
December 25, 2003
ESPN's Al Morganti speculates that Rangers GM Glen Sather could start showing some interest in Stars forward Bill Guerin.

"As time passes, the Rangers may start showing some interest in Bill Guerin. The Dallas Stars are still trying to drum up interest in Guerin," Morganti wrote this week. "The problem is, of course, Guerin's contract. Enter the Rangers. It's come to the point where calling Sather is like calling a friend to marry an ex-spouse to relieve you of the alimony payments."

Meanwhile, writing for ESPN, Jim Kelley believes the Stars solid play lately should help quell the Dave Tippett getting canned rumors, but that the team's improvement must continue and a quicker rate.

Kelley also reports that Stars GM Doug Armstrong is looking around the league for scoring help and could also look for bangers and players with grit to complement the Stars' array of skill players.
December 22, 2003
Here's the latest rumor from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun.

"Expect the Stars to be active once the NHL's Christmas roster freeze is lifted," Garrioch writes. "GM Doug Armstrong is trying to move D Richard Matvichuk and underachieving veteran LW Scott Young. There are teams interested in Matvichuk, including Atlanta and Toronto. He could help the blue line of either team."

The New York Daily News also reported that Stars GM Doug Armstrong was in the press box watching the Islanders for the second straight game.
December 21, 2003
Larry Brooks of the New York Post reports in Sunday's edition that there is some major "schisms" between some of the Stars' top players.

"We're told that the once close-knit team has dissolved into a collection of cliques, some barely on speaking terms with others. There's been a total eclipse of the heart in Dallas, where the $tars are in serious danger of missing the playoffs," Brooks wrote.

As a result, Brooks says the Stars are looking to make a major trade.

"The Stars are actively seeking to make a major personnel move. Modano, who at 33 is suffering through one of the poorest years of any elite player in NHL history (six goals, 17 points, minus-17 in 33 games through Friday), is not believed available, but just about everyone else is, including Billy Guerin - who would have to waive the no-trade clause he negotiated into the five-year, $45 million deal he signed two summers ago - and Jason Arnott, whom the Stars have been looking to move for more than a year," wrote Brooks.

Brooks says the Rangers and another unidentified team have solid interest in acquiring Arnott. Brooks speculated that Rangers center Eric Lindros could be a part of a deal for Arnott.

"But with Dallas looking to cut payroll, a move for Arnott involving Eric Lindros - very much on the market, with up to about $5.5M remaining on his contract - would be part of a larger package, perhaps significantly so," Brooks wrote.
December 17, 2003
More rumors from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun. He reported Wednesday that the Ottawa Senators, who are looking for some help at forward, have expressed an interest in Stars forward Brenden Morrow, but that Dallas is unlikely to give up Morrow. He also said the Stars would be willing to part with Scott Young, but Young has a no-trade clause that could make a deal difficult.

Garrioch also reported that Stars coach Dave Tippett is close to getting canned. It could happen as early as this weekend if the Stars don't show some improvement, according to Garrioch.
December 15, 2003
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports the Dallas Stars have expressed in Washington defenseman Sergei Gonchar, whom Garrioch suggested could be on the trading block.
December 8, 2003
Bruce Garrioch reports in Monday's Ottawa Sun that the Dallas Stars are looking to shake up their lineup. Garrioch quotes an NHL executive as saying: "The problem is all the guys he wants to get rid of have high price tags. They've tried to move Pierre Turgeon and nobody wants him. Jason Arnott is another guy they would like to move, but there's not a whole lot of interest there either. It's the same situation that every team is in with money.

Garrioch said the Stars are looking for some defensive help and may be interested in Ottawa defensemen Brian Pothier and Karel Rachunek.
December 5, 2003
The Ottawa Sun reports Stars GM Doug Armstrong and a team scout have been attending Ottawa Senators' games lately. Sens GM John Muckler said the two teams held some talks last month but talks are not going on currently.

"We have nothing going at this particular time that is serious," Muckler told the Sun in Friday's editions. "Nothing whatsoever.

"I'd say they like somebody on our team. That doesn't mean we're about to do anything. We're not talking now. Have we talked in the last two weeks? Sure we have."
November 23, 2003
Larry Brooks of the New York Post reports the Stars had scouts watching Washington play at Boston on Thursday. Brooks suggests that the Stars are still looking for help on the blueline.

Brooks wrote: "It's a sour situation in the locker room as well as on the ice in Dallas, we're told, where ownership's decision to not even attempt to keep Derian Hatcher has been exposed as the short-sighted blunder that was obvious to everyone but ownership months ago."

Brooks suggested Washington's Sergei Gonchar could help the Stars, but said Gonchar may be the only Capital not on the trading block right now. Brooks said Brendan Witt, a big, phsyical defenseman, would be a good fit for the Stars.
November 16, 2003
A report on Spector's Trade Rumors web site says the Stars could be looking at Carolina defenseman Bret Hedican. According to one of Spector's readers, a broadcast report said the Stars have had scouts at the last three Carolina games looking at the slick skating blueliner.
November 14, 2003
The New York Post is reporting that the New Jersey Devils are shopping forward Scott Gomez. The Post says the Stars are one of many teams that have an interest in Gomez, the 2000 Calder Trophy winner.
November 14, 2003
Mac Engel of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram was tossing around some trade scenarios in Friday's edition. He said the Stars could make a move for Mike Comrie of Edmonton, but said it probably wouldn't happen because the Stars don't need another center. He speculated that Pierre Turgeon would be a good fit in Atlanta, but said the Thrashers don't want Turgeon's big contract and have little to offer in return. Engel said defenseman Brendan Witt of Washington is a player the Stars probably have interest in. Engel speculated the Stars could get Witt in exchange for some draft picks.
November 11, 2003
The New York Islanders have made it clear they are getting rid of 27-year-old center Jason Wiemer by Tuesday. They will either trade him or waive him. Several New York media outlets, including Newsday and the New York Daily News, say Dallas is a possible destination. The Islanders are looking to dump the 6-1, 225 pound forward's $1.62 million salary.
