Stars down Bruins in shootout; winning streak hits six games

Saturday, January 14, 2006

Jussi Jokinen and Marty Turco continued their shootout perfection and that propelled the Dallas Stars to a 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins Saturday afternoon at the TD Banknorth Garden. The win was the sixth straight for the Stars and ran their shootout record to 5-0.

Sergei Zubov scored the Stars' other goal and Turco made 26 saves in regulation and overtime for Dallas, which improved to 7-9-0 in games when it trailed after the second period.

Jokinen, who is now 5-5 in shootouts,  scored the only goal of the shootout with a spectacular move on Boston goalie Tim Thomas. After Jokinen got Thomas to go down, he moved one way, then reached back with one hand and slid the puck into the net.

"That was a new move we saw today,'' Stars coach Dave Tippett told the Associated Press. "He brought that one out of the closet."

Turco stopped all three Boston chances including the final attempt by Boston's Sergei Samsonov, who tried to go five-hole. Turco, who has stopped all seven shots he has seen in shootouts this season, is now 3-0 in shootouts.

"It's just another game we found a way to win," Turco told the Associated Press.

The Bruins, who came out with some jump to their game and landed some big hits, outshot the Stars 11-10 in the first period. But the Stars had the better chances thanks to a three to one advantage in power players, including 45 seconds with a five-on-three advantage.

Dallas couldn't cash in on any of its chances thank to Thomas, who was making his first start of the season.

Thomas made a great stop on a  Zubov shot from the slot and then a one-timer by Lehtinen. Later in the period he made a great stop on a rebound chance by Trevor Daley.

The Bruins put some early pressure on the Stars in the second and Turco came up a superb save on a Brad Boyes while Boston was on the power play.

The Bruins got on the board at 6:05 mark of the second. Milan Jurcina picked off a Turco clearing attempt at the Dallas blue line, put a shot on net and it hit Stars defenseman Janne Niinimaa's stick and went past Turco.

Thomas continued to shine for the Bruins, making nice stops on Lehtinen, denying Morrow on a breakaway and then stopping a point blank shot while the Stars were on a power play.

After missing out on another five-on-three chance early in the third period, the Stars finally broke through on Thomas and the Bruins off the rush.

After taking a cross-ice pass from Zubov, Modano sent a cross-ice pass from left faceoff circle back to Zubov, who scored top shelf from the right faceoff circle at the 8:42 mark of the period.

Both teams had good scoring chances in the overtime. Lehtinen just missed over the net on a point blank shot. At the other end, Turco made a stop on a Samsonov breakaway attempt.
