Singing the Blues:
St. Louis tops Stars in OT
Saturday, February 04, 2006
For the fifth time in six games the Dallas Stars went to
overtime, but this time they only got one point instead of two.
Barret Jackman's goal at 2:16 of overtime lifted the St. Louis
Blues to a 4-3 win over the Stars at the Savvis Center Saturday
afternoon.
The loss snapped the Stars winning streak at six games and
dropped their record to 2-3 in four-on-four overtime this
season.
Jon Klemm, Jason Arnott and Jere Lehtinen scored for Dallas,
which fell two points behind Detroit for first overall in the
Western Conference.
The Blues won for the third time in four games and ran their
home winning streak to a season-high three games. The last three
Blues wins have come after regulation, with two coming in a
shootout and then Saturday's win in overtime.
The Stars got two full power plays in the first period, but
could only generate one shot between the two of the them.
The Blues had one power play and just after it expired, they
scored to take a 1-0 lead with 2:07 left in the first.
Lee Stempniak circled behind the Dallas net and set a cross ice
pass to a wide-open Dean McAmmond, who scored into the open side
of the net from the right faceoff circle.
The Stars started the second with 1:47 left on their third power
play, but were unable to score. Just after it expired they
did score when Mathias Tjarnqvist got the puck from Steve Ott,
skated down the right boards and backhanded a pass back to
Klemm, who beat Blues goalie Curtis Sanford with a shot from the
left faceoff circle at 2:27 of the second.
A little more than two minutes later the Stars finally cashed in
on a power play chance. After Sanford made stops on Martin
Skoula and Bill Guerin, Brenden Morrow got puck behind the net
and set up Arnott, who knocked the puck into the net from
point blank range.
But the Blues bounced back to take the lead with two goals 32
seconds apart later in the second. The first one came on the
power play. After Sanford made a great save on an Ott
shorthanded chance, the Blues rushed back up ice and Vladimir
Orszagh scored off the rebound of a Scott Young shot at the
15:39 mark.
The Blues then score on a three-on-two when Dallas Drake put a
shot on net from the left faceoff circle and Mike Glumac crashed
the net to score on the rebound at 16:11. It was Glumac's first
NHL goal.
The Stars came close to tying it late in the third, but Sanford
made a great save on a Mike Modano blast from the right faceoff
circle.
But Modano would help set up the goal to tie the game early in
the third period. After skating into the St. Louis zone, he
backhanded a cross-ice pass from the left wing to Jussi Jokinen,
who backhanded a pass back to Lehtinen, who scored on a wrist
shot at 4:55 of the third.
Sanford continued to excel for the Blues in the third, stopping
a good Modano chance from the slot and then denying Arnott on a
two-on-one break late in the period.
The Stars dominated the overtime period early, but the Blues got
the winner when Keith Tkachuk made a nice move to skate from the
left wing to the slot and then setup Jackman, whose shot from
the right faceoff circle appeared to deflect off the stick of
Dallas defenseman Stephane Robidas.
