| On Tuesday night Roberto Luongo made a dazzling
third period save on Calgary's Byron Ritchie that helped
preserve a Vancouver win. Wednesday night he continued
the heroics, taking some of the luster off what Stars
coach Dave Tippett thought was a solid effort by his
club.
"I thought we competed hard. It's a game we felt good
about," Tippett said after the 2-1 shootout loss in
Vancouver. "It was a game of inches. We hit a couple of
posts and finished on a post with [Sergei Zubov] in the
shootout and that's the way it goes sometimes."
The way it went Wednesday night was Luongo's way. He
made 39 saves in regulation and overtime, allowing just
one goal in 65 minutes. That came on a breakaway by Loui
Eriksson, who beat him five-hole with backhand
shot. Other than that he was superb, making several
excellent stops on some good scoring chances by the
Stars.
None as brilliant as the stop on Ritchie Tuesday
night, but he had big saves on Jere Lehtinen while on
his side in the first period and quickly got across the
crease to make a stop on Stephane Robidas in the third
period.
''Louie (Luongo) obviously
played pretty good down there," said Stars goalie Marty
Turco, who also played a solid game. "He didn't give us
any easy ones."
The saves on Lehtinen and Robidas both came on Dallas
power plays. The Stars were 0-7 with the man-advantage
and that was one area where they failed to take
advantage.
"We certainly played hard and deserved an
opportunity to get two points," Turco said. "But,
we had some power plays that we couldn't capitalize on."
Tippett gave some credit to Luongo for keeping the
Dallas power play off the board.
"That's your chance to win. I thought we had good
looks and good attempts, but like I said Luongo made a
couple big saves and [Philippe] Boucher hit the crossbar
on one. That's the way the game goes sometimes," said
Tippett.
Turco played a solid game for the Stars, stopping 20
of 21 shots on the night. He came up with a couple of
key saves in the third to help Dallas get a point in the
game.
"There was quality goaltending in that game," said
Tippett.
But the Canucks goaltending was just a shade better
and they got the extra point in the shootout. Now it's
onto Edmonton Thursday night to take the Oilers.
"We compete hard," said Tippett. "We're going to have
to jump right back on it and compete hard again tomorrow
night." |
