| Stars coach Dave Tippett was a guest
on the New York Islanders radio pre-game show and
was asked was Islanders fans should know about center
Mike Modano.
"He might be 37-years-old but he is
still a great player," Tippett said. "He still skates
well. It seems like he has gotten this record behind him
and he's been playing a lot better lately. Hopefully we
can continue to keep him on a roll."
Well, Modano helped keep the Stars on
a roll with another stellar performance Monday night,
scoring two goals, including the game-winner in
overtime.
And Modano is still on a roll too. He
now has six goals and six assists in the last ten games.
A stretch during which the Stars have
won six straight, picked up points in eight straight
(6-0-2) and in ten of eleven (8-1-2).
Monday's 3-2 overtime win over the
Islanders was far from picture perfect, but it was
another two points.
"We've been winning ugly but they are
wins," Modano said on the Stars' post-game show. "Our
goalies have been playing outstanding, keeping us in
games and we have been finding some timely goals from
everybody."
Modano delivered two of the timely
goals Monday, scoring the all important second goal of
the game to tie it at 1-1 after the Islanders had taken
the lead. And then he delivered the big blow in
overtime.
That may have been the most impressive
part of the Stars' performance Monday - how they
responded after the Islanders tied the game with a late
power play goal.
The Stars responded well,
keeping up the pressure late in regulation and that
carried over into overtime where they were aggressive
and ended it quickly.
"I don't think you could
have drawn it up any better," Modano said. "That's the
most we've moved in overtime in a long time, everybody
moving, keeping their legs going and holding on to the
puck, that's something that's fun to see and fun to be a
part of. The four of us were moving, giving each other
some good looks and finally a nice rebound came out to
me."
Marty Turco came up big early when the
Stars got off to yet another sluggish start and he came
up with the save of the game when he stopped Chris Simon
point blank early in the third when it was still a 1-1
game. He miscalculated on the Richard Park shorthanded
goal and had another near misadventure with the puck in
the third period, but he was solid.
The Stars got some very good shifts
out of a line of Steve Ott, Jeff Halpern and Stu Barnes
and Halpern scored a big goal in the third period to put
the Stars up 2-1.
One area they didn't win on this night
was in the special teams department. The power play went
0-5 against a very good penalty killing unit and gave up
a shorthanded goal and a couple of other shorthanded
chances. The penalty kill gave up one late, but it still
had a couple of big kills. On this night special teams
play got the Islanders one point. The Stars ended up
with the two points.
Overall, the Stars are
off to a solid start on the trip as far as points. It
hasn't been pretty at times, but the Star continue to
show an ability to gather steam as the game goes along
and get better. They took play away from the Rangers
Sunday over the latter part of the game and they did the
same with the Islanders Monday. In the end they found a
way to win both and keep the winning streak alive.
"All the little things
that allow you to win hockey games different ways seem
to be part of what we are doing right now," Tippett
explained during his appearance on the Islanders radio
broadcast.
And that's added up to
six straight wins. Next stop is New Jersey, which has
won four in a row. |
