| The Marty Turco road show continued
Saturday night in Calgary as the Dallas netminder turned
in another stellar performance.
Turco, coming off solid outings in
Vancouver and Edmonton, was spectacular at the Pengrowth
Saddledome, stopping 31 of 32 shots in helping the Stars
secure a sweep of their three-game trip through Western
Canada.
Turco stopped 92 of 97 shots during
the three games. He was spectacular at times Saturday
night in Calgary.
"He was like that the whole trip,"
said Stars coach Dave Tippett. "He gave us a chance to
win every night. There was some fatigue in our game, but
we had the attitude of bend, but don't break. Marty was
at the forefront of that, where he wasn't going to let
the game slip away."
Turco's save on Flames forward Daymond
Langkow in the second period, which came while Calgary
was on the power play and already up 1-0, was a key
turning point in the game. The Stars scored to tie the
game a short time later when a Mike Ribeiro shot bounced
off Brenden Morrow.
"You never know what's going to make a
difference in the game, you make one save at the right
time and it manages to turn the game around," said
Turco. "That's the way it is for a goaltender in this
league."
Turco was key on the Stars' penalty
kill, which was 7-7 on this night and went 18-18 on the
road trip. Turco made 11 saves while the Flames were on
the power play Saturday night.
"A big factor is Marty Turco," Stars
forward Niklas Hagman of the Stars penalty killing. "He
played tremendously again."
The Flames had to tip their hat to
Turco as well.
"Certainly he was part of the
difference for them tonight,'' Calgary coach Mike Keenan
said. "He was certainly part of their penalty killing
and he had a big night for them.''
Hagman chipped in with the key goal in
the game, breaking a 1-1 tie early in the third period
by roofing a shot over Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff.
The Stars got a great game from Steve
Ott, who played a strong physical game and got under the
skin of the Flames, including their captain Jarome
Iginla.
"He was on the top of his game tonight
and got under their skin," said Stars captain Brenden
Morrow. "At the end of a road trip you are looking for a
little bit of boost of energy and Steve provided that
for us tonight."
And when the road trip ended the Stars
had six of a possible six points. It wasn't always
pretty at times, but it was three points.
"Coming out of the break we know we
have to play better and we have had spurts of playing
better," said Tippett. "But let's be realistic. Marty
Turco has been our best player the last three games. We
still have a lot of work to do." |
