| The Dallas Stars wanted to make a
strong push coming out of the All-Star break and so far
they are doing just that. And some of the team's top
players continue to lead the charge.
Captain Brenden Morrow has points in
all four games since the break. He had a goal and an
assist on this night, pushing his total to three goals
and three assists since the break.
He was superb Tuesday night, leading
the Stars with six shots on goal and four hits in the
game to go along with the offensive production. He
scored the first goal by bouncing a puck off traffic in
front Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo to tie the game 1-1
and then made a pretty backhand pass to set up Jere
Lehtinen's power play goal that put the Stars up 2-1 in
the second period.
"You've got a couple teams with
injuries, you are playing tight to the vest and it is
hard to score goals. It falls right into what Brenden
Morrow is," Stars coach Dave Tippett said. "He finds
hard goals around the net, he creates space around the
net. On the first one, he gets the puck at the net. He
makes a good play on the next one. That's the kind of
game Brenden should thrive in and he did."
Then, of course there was the big goal
in the shootout, beating Luongo with a nicely place shot
high to the blocker side.
"That was huge," Ribeiro said of
Morrow's overall performance. "We need our line to
create offense and play physical, and Brenden was a
great example. He had a goal and an assist, winning goal
in the shootout, he's the best example we can have here.
Work ethic - we follow him."
For his part, Ribeiro picked up two
more assists Tuesday night, giving him seven in four
games since the break.
Lehtinen, playing in third game since
coming off injured reserve, scored a big power play goal
in the game.
"Lehtinen is coming around," Tippett
said. "He's getting his timing back and getting more
comfortable again."
Marty Turco, who was the key reason
the Stars were able to sweep the recent three-game road
trip through Western Canada, continued his stellar play
in net. He stopped 22 of 24 shots on the night to
improve to 4-0-0 since the All-Star break with a 1.71
goals against average and a .942 save percentage. He
stopped five of six in the shootout as well to help get
the Stars the all important extra point in this game.
"I'm just doing what I need to do on
the ice," said Turco. "I need everything I have in the
tank for us to win this time of year."
And right now that's what the Stars
are doing. The four straight wins and eight points out
of the break are huge and just makes the Stars' position
better in relation to those teams that have games in
hand. But Tippett said the focus has to remain on what
the Stars are doing and right now that appears to be
working.
"You take care of your own business,"
Tippett said. "We have played more games than the other
teams, but we look at it that we just have to keep
winning and take care of what we are doing." |
