| It was a moment that seemed to sum up
the Stars' 6-2 rout of the St. Louis Blues that pushed
their winning streak to six games and remain the hottest
team in the league since the All-Star break.
After Jussi Jokinen scored early in
the second period, the red light behind St. Louis goalie
Hannu Toivonen wouldn't turn off. That was the kind of
night of night it was for the Stars, and Toivonen and
the struggling Blues.
Five different players scored goals
and 12 different players registered points for the
Stars, whose score by committee attack was in full
force.
The Stars' special teams were
excellent. The power play was 3-4. So was the team's top
ranked penalty kill, which was 4-4 on the night, and is
28-29 over the last seven games.
The goaltending was solid. Mike Smith,
coming off the shutout of Minnesota on Thursday, stopped
27 of 29 shots on Saturday and was superb handling the
puck.
The Stars kept pushing even when they
had a big lead. A sellout crowd at the American Airlines
Center got a good show.
It was another win in what has been a
strong run since the All-Star break. Six straight wins
have pushed the Stars to 14 games over the .500 mark,
and given them 73 points.
"We find ways to win," Stars center
Mike Modano said. "Checking and defending has been our
forte. We're trying to create [our opportunities] as
much as we can."
And the Stars cashed in on those
opportunities. They scored six goals on 23 shots.
Several members of the committee had big nights or
continued nice runs.
Antti Miettinen potted two goals on
the night, giving him 12 for the season and establishing
a new career high.
"It's nice to score goals, and I try
to score as many as I can," Miettinen said. "The best
thing is getting the win and keeping this run going."
Mike Ribeiro remains hot in the point
production department. He had a goal and two assists in
the game, giving him ten points (one goals, nine
assists) since the All-Star break.
Brenden Morrow scored another goal,
giving him four goals since the break and eight in his
last ten games. He is one short of tying his career-high
of 25 set in 2003-04.
Jere Lehtinen has two goals in five
games since returning from the break. Jokinen has two
goals in the last five games.
"Scoring by committee is how we play,
and it makes us a hard team to play against," Stars
coach Dave Tippett said.
Still, Tippett tried to keep things in
perspective. In other words, the record may say 6-0-0
over the last six games but the Stars coach sees a lot
of room for improvement.
"You've got to keep everything in
perspective because there were some games I didn't like
the way we played," said Tippett. "I like the way our
goalie played, but I didn't like the way our team
played."
The first three games of the streak,
which came during the Western Canada road trip, were a
product of some spectacular goaltending by Marty Turco.
On Saturday night the Stars got some
help from sloppy goaltending on the other side, which
helped stake to the Stars to a commanding lead in the
game
"Our play executed and our penalty
kill was excellent, we didn't give up much," Tippett
said. "Their goaltending probably wasn't as strong as
they would like it to be, so we got fortunate to get a
lead."
One play in particular Saturday night
seemed to rub Tippett the wrong way. That was a play
involving Ribeiro that led to the Blues'
second goal late in the second period.
After Ribeiro lost the puck at this
own blue line, he got out hustled at the other end by
Jamal Mayers, who then out
battled Ribeiro for the puck and finished off the play
by scoring on a backhand shot to make it a 4-2 game.
"I don't like to see a play like
Ribeiro's," Tippett said. "That's an example of a play
if that is a 2-2 game, that is a huge factor. I don't
want to be nitpicky on that, but if we are going to be
the team we need to be those things have to be in place.
And we have a lot of young players who have to learn
some of those things. That is what we will continue to
strive for." |
