Contract status of postseason players Tuesday, May 20, 2008 Here's a brief look at the contract status of the players who suited up for the Dallas Stars during the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Of the 26 players who dressed for the Stars during the postseason, 16 are under contract for next season. Of the group under contract, 13 are under one-way deals worth a total of $43.1 million in cap costs. Three other players - defensemen Mark Fistric and Matt Niskanen and forward Chris Conner - are all under two-way contracts. If you consider Fistric and Niskanen as likely roster players, that could push the Stars up to just under $45 million in cap costs 15 likely roster players next season. The NHL salary cap is expected to rise from the $50.3 million this season to somewhere in the $54 million to $56 million range in 2008-09. The league will release a final number later in the summer. The Stars have three key restricted free agents among the group of players who dressed during the postseason. They are defenseman Trevor Daley and forwards Loui Eriksson and B.J. Crombeen. Daley is eligible for arbitration. There are seven unrestricted free agents, including defenseman Mattias Norstrom and back up goalie Johan Holmqvist. There are five forwards who are unrestricted, including Stu Barnes, Antti Miettinen, Niklas Hagman, Toby Petersen and Brad Winchester. Chris Conner, who played one game during the playoffs, is under a two-way contract for next season.
