Daley gets three-year, $6.9 million deal

Wednesday, May 28, 2008

Stars defenseman Trevor Daley is under contract for the next three seasons. The Stars announced Wednesday that they had signed Daley to a three-year deal worth $6.9 million.

Daley, who was scheduled to be a restricted free agent on July 1, will get paid $2.1 will next season, $2.3 million in 2009-10 and $2.5 million in 2010-2011.

"At just 24 years of age, Trevor continues to grow as a hockey player and we are looking for his game to improve over the next three years," Stars co-GM Les Jackson said in a release announcing the deal. "He is a valuable member of our hockey club and is a key part to our strong nucleus of younger players."

Daley played in all 82 games this past season and set career highs in goals (5), assists (19) and points (24). He had one goal in 18 playoff games.

Daley made $800,000 last season, which was the final year of a two-year contract. Daley was eligible for arbitration this summer, but the two sides avoided that issue with this new deal.

Daley's contract, which will give him a cap hit of $2.3 million, pushes the Stars to $45.4 million for 14 players under one-way contracts for next season. If you include defensemen Matt Niskanen and Mark Fistric, who are under two-way deals, the Stars have 16 likely roster players under contract for about $47 million in cap costs.

The salary cap next season is expected to rise to between $54 million and $56 million from this past season's level of $50.3 million.

Here's a look at the Stars' salary cap situation for the 2008-09 season.
