Ovechkin's got Hart

Thursday, June 12, 2008

Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin, who led the league in goals with 65 and points with 112, was named the NHL's MVP Thursday night in Toronto.

Ovechkin took home the Hart Trophy as MVP and the Lester B. Pearson Award, which is given to the league's outstanding player as voted on by NHLPA members.

Ovechkin's coach, Bruce Boudreau, won the Jack Adams Award as outstanding coach. Boudreau took over the Capitals, who were last in the Eastern Conference, in November and led them on a 37-17-7 run that earned them a birth in the playoffs.

Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom won his sixth Norris Trophy as outstanding defenseman. New Jersey's Martin Brodeur won his fourth Vezina Trophy as outstanding goalie. Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk won the Selke as outstanding defensive forward and his third straight Lady Byng for gentlemanly play and sportsmanship. Chicago's Patrick Kane took home the Calder as outstanding rookie.
