Looking ahead to 2008-09: Stars and the salary cap Saturday, June 14, 2008 The NHL put a final stamp on the season by handing out awards Thursday night in Toronto. Now, it's time to start to start looking ahead to next season. Here's a brief glance at where the Stars stand as far as cap commitments for next season's roster. The NHL will release a final cap number for next season some time in the next few weeks, but it could come in somewhere around $55 million based on the latest revenue numbers. Here's a look at two scenarios concerning the cap based on the players the Stars have under contract right now. Scenario #1 Here's scenario one, which looks at just players under one-way contracts. The Stars currently have 15 players (one goalie, five defenseman and nine forwards) under one-way deals for a total of $45.95 million.
Scenario #2 Here's scenario two, which adds in players with two-way contracts who are both likely roster players and adds in a couple of possible roster players. Included here are defensemen Matt Niskanen and Mark Fistric and possible roster players in forward Fabian Brunnstrom, who has mentioned as a likely roster player by Stars management, and goalie Tobias Stephan, who could end up being the backup to Marty Turco. With this scenario the Stars have 19 players (two goaltenders, seven defenseman and ten forwards) under contract for $50.3 million in cap costs. That would leave three or four forward spots still open and perhaps about $5 million in cap space, not considering any pad to cover in season acquisitions and injuries. Not listed is forward Loui Eriksson, the one regular player from last season who is a restricted free agent and will be a roster player next season.
