Trades dominate round
one of NHL draft
Friday, June 20, 2008
The Dallas Stars were quiet on the first day of the
NHL Entry Draft in Ottawa, but several teams were busy not only with the
draft but on the trade front as well. There were 13 total trades made
Friday night, including some big deals involving players like Olli
Jokinen, Alex Tanguay and Mike Cammalleri.
As expected, forward Steve Stamkos went first overall
to the Tampa Bay Lightning. But before the first pick was made the trade
news was already breaking.
Florida dealt Jokinen to the Phoenix Coyotes for
defensemen Keith Ballard and Nick Boynton and the 49th overall pick in
the draft.
Calgary, Los Angeles and Anaheim pulled off
a three-way deal. The Flames traded the 17th pick and a 2nd round pick
in 2009 to Los Angeles for Cammalleri and the Kings’ 2nd round pick
(48th overall). The Kings then packaged the 17th and 28th pick (acquired
from Dallas last season) and sent it to Anaheim for the 12th pick in the
draft.
The Flames traded Tanguay and a fifth round pick
(138th overall) to Montreal for the 25th pick and a 2nd round pick in
2009.
There were also eight trades involving just picks as
teams moved around in the first round of the draft, which lasted almost
four hours.
Although Stamkos went first overall, the first round
of the draft was heavy on defensemen. A total of 12 blue liners
were taken in the first round, including ten of the first 20 selections.
Stars' pick gets moved around
The Dallas Stars would have picked 28th in the first
round, but they sent that pick to the Los Angeles Kings at the 2007
trade deadline as part of the deal that brought Mattias Norstrom to
Dallas.
That 28th pick eventually ended up in the hands of the
Phoenix Coyotes, who used it to select Russian forward Viktor Tikhonov.
But that 28th pick changed hands a few times during
the night. It started with the Kings, who move it to Anaheim as part of
a three-way trade with Calgary. The Ducks then traded the 28th pick to
the Coyotes for two second round picks (35th and 39th overall).

Rounds 2-7 of the draft will be held Saturday. The
Stars' first scheduled pick is in the second round (59th overall).
Co-GM Brett Hull said although the Stars didn't get a
first round pick on Friday, he still thinks there is enough quality in
the draft to get some good prospects on Saturday.
"Players are so good now and drafts are so deep that
in the middle or late second round you can get some good players," Hull
told the NHL Network Friday night. "I look at our team that came within
two wins of the Stanley Cup and we had four or five players from the
second round or later. There's a lot of good players out there and you
trust your scouts to pick them up."
Besides the second round pick, the Stars have a third
round pick (89th overall), a fifth round pick (149th overall), a sixth
round pick (176th overall) and a 7th round pick (209th overall).
