Stars take five in draft

Saturday, June 21, 2008

The Dallas Stars didn't make any moves on Saturday and used the five picks they started the draft with to pick a goalie, two defensemen and two forwards.

The Stars first pick came in the second round (59th overall) and they used that to select goalie Tyler Beskorowany from the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League. Beskorowany was an unknown coming into the season but made a good impression on a bad Owen Sound team.

He was 12-19-3 with a 4.04 goals against average and a .900 save percentage. He faced 70 shots in one game and faced 50 or more shots five other times. Overall, he averaged about 40 shots against per appearance this season.

His play was good enough to be named team MVP and Rookie of the year.

Here's a look at the five players the Stars selected during Saturday's portion of the NHL Entry Draft.

Scouting Report
Has excellent size and moves well within the crease. Butterfly goalie who covers a large part of the net. Good athlete with excellent reflexes and a sharp glove hand. Usually in position and plays his angles well, but can get caught out of position now and then. Puckhandling needs work. Like many young goalies he struggles with consistency.
Quotable

"He's got the size and the ability that makes him very attractive to teams. He's got the potential to be a franchise goaltender."

Offensive defenseman who is an excellent skater. Moves the puck well with both his passing and skating ability. Makes a great first pass. Handles pressure well and makes good decisions. Loves to join the rush. Can quarterback the power play and has an excellent one-timer. Defensive game needs work. Some scouts say he is soft in his own end and will shy away from physical play. Doesn't have great size, so he'll need to add some bulk.
