Survey Results: Stars and Free Agency Part I

Thursday, June 26, 2008

Here's the first round of results of our survey asking readers what they think the Stars will do or should do in free agency this summer.

More responses in the days ahead. Feel free to leave a comment in the form at the bottom of the page.

Thoughts: Micheal Ryder and Aaron Voros.
Defense is fine no changes needed.
Stephan should be fine as backup.
A couple depth forwards, but leave room and take low-end talent to allow growing space for the rook's.

Maybe a defenseman or two depending on who will be back and who will be leaving. Someone who is going to be solid defensively and be able to punish the Holmstrom's out there.

If they think Stephan is ready, I'm willing to give him a shot. The coaching staff has been so good at judging goalie talents in the past, if they think he's good enough, he is. However, a veteran would be nice for peace of mind and possible injuries.

Overall this is a good team and one that made a serious run for a cup. With upcoming youth talent, and a lot of it, there don't need to be drastic changes like those that have been called for in the last 2-5 years.
Play Stephan as a backup. If he doesn't play good enough, then bring some veteran goalie to help out Turco

Keep defence as it is. One of the young defencemen might suffer from sophomore jinx, but the depth is still enough. Don`t hesitate to play Jancevski if there is a need for rugged and experienced defenceman.

Try to land Michael Ryder. He would be a perfect fit for Ribeiro-Morrow line. If he decides to go somewhere else, then keep the offense as it is. If young players such as Eriksson, Brunnström or Pushkarev does not help the offence in terms of goal scoring enough, then go after a free-agent winger on February's trade deadline or even earlier.
Voros, Ryder up front;

Defense: Needs Boucher to bounce back and the kids to keep going.

Backup: Stephan's job to lose but likely bring in a guy like Dubikienalphabetz or Denis as competition.
I believe the Stars are pretty well set as they are. Let it ride, and let's see how last year's experience effects the team this upcoming season. I don't know how anyone can be anything but positive about the new season. GO STARS!!
Stars need atop 6 right shot RW and a veteran replacement for Barnes. The obvious top 6 forward is Ryder but a vet like Shanahan or Brunette (although a left shot may work . A guy like Satan could also be considered. I suspect the salary would have to be less than 3 million.

The Barnes replacement needs to be a guy with versatility at about 1 million. Conroy, Yelle, Gratton Smolinski maybe Tucker could be considered.
If Hagman goes they need to replace his goal scoring since Brunnstrom won't be able to it in his first season. They aren't going to get a big name or big score unless they move someone making over $2 mil to make room (Boucher).

I'd give James Neal or one of the other kids a shot too.

The seven defense are fine but they need some veteran depth especially if they follow my advice and trade Boucher for offense.

No on Stephan. Get a cheap vet to back up Turco.
I expect the Stars to be in on a couple of the second tier fa's, unless they trade off a Boucher or the like. I think they will make the cursory Hossa inquiries, but will more likely be looking at the likes of Ryder or Brunette, maybe take a flier on Satan if the price is right.
Not a lot needs to be done. Maybe a middle of the pack forward who can pick up the scoring slack for Hagman and a veteran 3rd line type to replace Barnes if he retires.

The defense is fine I can't see sending one of the younger players to Peoria or where ever since they don't have an AHL team. Maybe someone with NHL experience to stash in the AHL for depth.

Give Stephan a shot because he'll get screwed if he ends up with someone else's minor league team.
I think we really need some some size on the wings a power forward please morrow cant do it all.
Montreal right-winger Michael Ryder.
I don't expect LesBrett to do much because of the trade for Richards and the extensions to Ribeiro and Zubov. Just like last year that's the free agent money. Just a few low level adds and that will be it. I wonder if the media know it alls will raise a ruckus.
