Survey Results: Stars and Free Agency Part 2

Thursday, June 26, 2008

Here's the second and final round of results of our survey asking readers what they think the Stars will do or should do in free agency this summer.

The Stars should go after a winger to play with Brad Richards. I haven't looked too closely at the free agents, but there could be some good fits at reasonable prices.
They need people that can score and not miss the net so often. At least shoot it on net, geeeeez....Are you listening Modano?
Sign Ryder and/or leave the spots open for the kids.

The defense stands pat.

Stephan is the backup because of cap concerns.
bring in Stephan. Go after Ryder and get Satan, or Brunette.
Tobias is ready so no need for overprice bad backup goalie
- Let the kids play
- Trade away Boucher if anyone gives more that a nickel for him
They still could use a winger who can be a proven scorer for them in addition to Morrow and a healthy Lehtinen. Either one of their youngsters needs to step up (Brunnstrom? Eriksson?) or they'll need to look for a bargain on the UFA market. Perhaps a Michael Ryder as a low risk option? Or, they could consider dealing Boucher and Lehtinen (NTC?) to open up enough cap room to make a run at Marian Hossa. Doubtful, of course, but an option. Hossa would be a sensational addition if they could finagle a way to get him in under the cap!
Dallas will be quiet in free agency. The core of this team is solid. And getting Richards last year and re-signing Peterson solidifies the middle. I would much rather see them spend potential free agent money on re-signing Hagman and Barnes (if he doesn't retire). He's a contributor on the ice and exactly what this team needs in the locker room. And continue to let the younger wingers have their chance.
But they should sign a veteran goalie if the price is right. Holmqvist is damaged goods. If no good bargains can be found than let Stephan have his shot. The once plentiful goalie stockpile in the Stars' system is all dried up.
Defense - Let the kids play....Besides Jancevski is signed and waiting in the wings.
If the money and terms were right, I'd be happy to see the Stars re-sign Hagman.

Doubt they can make a big splash otherwise in free agency, but they'll need to find a veteran forward if they lose Hagman and Miettinen.

Would like to see Stephan in the minors another season since he'll ride the pine in Dallas. Stars can bring back Holmqvist if he'll sign for $1 million or so.

Defense is fine as is.
I think Stephan will be fine as the backup goaltender, and if they find out early on next season that he's not ready, there are plenty of second tier goalies that will be out there looking for work.

The Defense should be alright as well, with Niskanen, Fistric, Grossman, and Daley only improving their respective games. If Boucher can bring back decent value in a trade, they should pursue that to add some youth and skill to the forward group.

The only free agent forwards I would be interested in for the Stars are Michael Ryder, Jason Williams and to a lesser extent Ruslan Fedotenko. If any of the three could be had for a decent price, the Stars could bring them in to play on the right side with Ribeiro and Morrow. This would allow for the other two "forward pairs" to be Modano-Lehtinen and Richards-Eriksson. I'm afraid the Stars will look into Darcy Tucker as a potential linemate for Ribs and BMo... in my opinion it would only be a viable solution if he signs on for one year only (at not too high a cost).

I think the Stars' UFAs (Hagman, Barnes, Miettinen) should all be let go. Hagman is a nice energy player but produced way over his head this season and will be grossly overpaid for it this year. We saw him disappear in the playoffs when the going got tough. Barnes will forever be a fan favorite but it's time to let Toby Petersen take over his role and use the extra roster spot for a young player the likes of Neal, Pushkarev, etc.
Stephan should be able to back up Marty.

What they need is one or two scoring right wings. They seem to have enough youngsters for the rest -- depending, of course on whether some more of the vets might retire.
I think the Stars need to sign a top six forward. They need a winger who can score and play on one of the top two lines. There are some wingers that will be free and might be affordable that I think could be good fits. They are Michael Ryder, Pavol Demitra, Miroslav Satan, Markus Naslund, or Huselius. Or maybe they could even sign Sean Avery or re-sign Nik Hagman. They could also need to sign a depth defenseman. I am comfortable with the d the way it is now, but if somebody gets hurt or 2 guys do then you will wish you had another depth guy. As far as goalie goes, I think we should plan on going with Stephan. An experienced backup is a luxury I dont think we can afford right now. Especially if we sign a forward. But if we don't spend any money, then we could add a veteran backup late in the offseason.
