News & Notes Thursday, June 05, 2008 More good news for the NHL and NBC. Wednesday night's deciding game of the Stanley Cup Final between the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins drew an average of 6.8 million viewers, making it the third most watched Stanley Cup Final game since the NHL returned to network TV in 1995. It was also the most watched Game 6 in the Final since 1995 and more than doubled the rating of the last sixth game of a Stanley Cup Final, which was between Edmonton and Carolina in 2006. Wednesday's game drew a 4.0 national rating and a 7 share. That national rating includes all U.S. television markets. The overnight numbers, which measure the biggest markets, were a 4.4 rating and a 7 share. The series on NBC, which covered Games 3-6, averaged a 3.2 rating and 6 share, making it the most watched series since the 2002 Stanley Cup Final between Detroit and Carolina, which earned a 3.6 rating and seven share. This year's series doubled the ratings of last year's Anaheim-Ottawa series, which drew a 1.6 rating. The 2008 series drew an average of 5.4 million viewers compared with 5.8 million viewers in 2002. Ratings were down in Canada, where the series on CBC averaged 2.3 million viewers over the six games, down from 2.5 million for Anaheim-Ottawa in 2007. Ratings were up in Canada over the last time the Final featured two U.S.-based teams. CBC averaged just over 1.5 million viewers for Anaheim-New Jersey in 2003.
