Prospects get things rolling this week

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

Dallas Stars' training camp is still more than a week away, but some of the team's top prospects will be getting a jump on things this week when they travel to Michigan to see how they stack up against prospects from some other NHL teams.

For the second straight year the Stars will take part in the NHL Prospect Tournament in Traverse City, Michigan, which is home to the Detroit Red Wings' training camp. Prospects from the Stars, Red Wings and six other NHL teams will take part in the tournament, which gets underway Friday.

Traverse City Schedule

Date Opponent Time
Fri September 7 Minnesota 2:30 pm (CT)
Sat September 8 St. Louis 6:00 pm (CT)
Mon September 10 Columbus 1:30 pm (CT)
Tue September 11 TBD TBD

The Stars' roster will feature three 2005 draft picks - defenseman Matt Niskanen, left wing James Neal and center Perttu Lindgren - who begin their pro careers with the organization this season.

Also on the roster is 2004 first round pick Mark Fistric, a defenseman who made his pro debut with Iowa of the AHL last season.

Fistric, Neal and Niskanen were all impressive at the team's development camp held in Frisco back in July. Lindgren missed the camp due to illness.

All four of those players are expected to get good looks from Stars management during Dallas' training camp and the preseason and all four are candidates to possibly see playing time in the NHL this season.

Left wing Richard Clune and center Tom Wandell, both 2005 draft picks, and center Aaron Gagnon, a free agent signing, are also on the latest roster. All three are in the first year of their entry-level contracts with the Stars.

The roster also features some of the team's 2007 draft picks including highly skilled Czech-born center Ondrej Roman, who was impressive at the development camp in Frisco.

Tournament format

The Stars will play in the Western Conference with Minnesota, St. Louis and Columbus. Detroit, Atlanta, New York Rangers and Tampa Bay are in the Eastern Conference.

Teams will play each team in their conference in a series of round-robin games. After those three games the first place team in the West will play the first place team in the East for the tournament championship. The two second place teams will play for third place, the third place teams will play for fifth place and the fourth place teams will play for seventh place.

The Stars went 2-1-0 in round-robin play last year and then beat the New York Rangers to take third place in the tournament.

Top prospects

The tournament is expected to feature several top prospects. Eleven players ranked who were ranked in the top 60 by McKeen's recently are scheduled to play in the tournament.

Canada blows out Russia again, clinches Super Series win

The Canada/Russia Super Series shifted to Canada for the fifth game and it was the same old story - a convincing win for Canada. After a scoreless first period, the Canadians exploded for five goals in the second period on their way to an 8-1 win in Winnipeg Tuesday night.

Canada now leads the eight-game series 5-0-0 and has outscored the Russians 25-7 in securing the series win by taking the first five games. Game 6 is Wednesday in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Stars defenseman prospect Ivan Vishnevskiy had no points for Russia.
