Stars News & Notes

Day one of the NHL free agent feeding frenzy was busy, but the Dallas Stars were quiet. There were no signings. The only deal with a Dallas Stars twist involved forward Niklas Hagman, who signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Hagman, who scored 27 goals while making $675,000 last season, signed a four-year deal worth $12 million with the Maple Leafs. There was no other activity involving the Stars' other unrestricted free agents.

As for the Stars, they remain one of the teams that are in the mix for agitator Sean Avery, who made $1.9 million last season but is said to be looking for $4 million this season. The Stars were rumored to have an interest in Avery before free agency opened because of co-GM Brett Hull's friendship with Avery during the pair's days as Detroit Red Wings.

Rangers GM Glen Sather, who has said he would like to re-sign Avery, has apparently offered $2.75 million. That makes it seem likely that Avery, who scored 15 goals in 57 games last season, will be playing elsewhere.

The Stars were also linked to Wade Redden sweepstakes. But the defenseman, who played last season for Ottawa, ended up signing a six-year, $39 million deal with the Rangers.
