During an interview Monday on a Toronto radio station, NHL senior vice president Colin Campbell explained his decision not to suspended Stars center Mike Ribeiro for his slash on Detroit goalie Chris Osgood.

When asked on The Fan 590 in Toronto if he had given any thought to suspending Ribeiro, Campbell said he didn't.

"No. There's a slash and then there's a slash," Campbell said. "I can't even tell there's an injury on this play, if there was. I'm sure there wasn't. If you look at the slash, the use of his stick, there was no follow through. It stopped and he just kind of raked it across his chest."

As for Osgood going down after getting hit by Ribeiro's stick, Campbell suggested it is something players and teams do to try to get get a competitive edge because the stakes are so high in the playoffs.

"All due respect to Chris, I guess that's what you have to do today," Campbell said. "Teams are competitive and they try to do what they have to do to draw penalties, to draw suspensions, to get any kind of edge because the prize is pretty valuable."

Morrow, Modano banged up but play

Stars captain Brenden Morrow and center Mike Modano both were shaken up on plays in Monday's game, but were able to finish the game.

Morrow struggled to get back to the bench when he tried to nail Red Wings defenseman Brad Stuart behind the Detroit goal, but missed and hit the glass. Morrow, who hurt his arm/shoulder, continued to play.

"He just a got a little bit of a stinger, but he's fine," said Stars coach Dave Tippett.

Modano took a hard hit from Detroit's Kris Draper late in the second period, left the game but did return for the third period.

"He got a bump on the head, so we'll see where he is tomorrow," said Tippett. "He came back and played the third, so I don't see it being a problem.

Lehtinen out, Conner in for Stars

Stars forward Jere Lehtinen missed Monday's game with a leg injury suffered in Saturday's game. Into the mix came forward Chris Conner, who made his NHL playoff debut. He opened the game on a line with Mike Modano and Brad Winchester and logged a total of 4:17 in ice time.

"Speed would be the big factor there.  The pace of the game is pretty quick out there.  He’s a guy that had a great training camp for us last year.  But when we have called him up from the minors, in and out, he’s given us a real spark," Stars coach Dave Tippett said. "He’s a guy that’s great on the forecheck, creates loose pucks.  Not an overly physical guy, but a tenacious guy.  I think this is the kind of series he would fit well in.

Stu Barnes missed his sixth straight game  for the Stars with concussion-like symptoms.

Franzen undergoes tests

Red Wings forward Johan Franzen remained in Detroit Monday to undergo tests for a possible condition. As of late Monday the Red Wings didn't have any update on Franzen's condition.

"I know he saw doctors today," general manager Ken Holland told the Detroit Free Press Monday evening. "I haven’t heard any results."

Stars better in faceoff circle

The Stars were better in the faceoff circle Monday night, especially early in the game. They were 11-22 (50 percent) through the first period and 18-38 (47 percent) through two periods. They ended the game 23-54 (43 percent).

Mike Modano won 11 of 21, Brad Richards won four of eight and Toby Petersen won six of 14.

  • Stars captain Brenden Morrow has points in five straight playoff a games, a career-best streak.
