Red Wings News & Notes: Franzen still out

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

Tests on Red Wings forward Johan Franzen showed nothing significant, but he will not play in Game 4 because he continues to have headaches.

Franzen, who missed Game 3, did not travel with the team to Dallas and underwent the testing on Monday. He's been experiencing the headaches since early in the second round series with Colorado.

"He's day-to-day. Hopefully he feels better in a few days," Wings GM Ken Holland told reporters Tuesday. "He continues to have headaches. Nothing significant. We're hoping he's going to be back sometime soon, but he's not ready for Game 4."

At this point Franzen can't even work out. Once the headaches go away, Franzen will be tested again. Holland said the situation is in a holding pattern for right now.

"He's not healthy enough to play. He's not healthy enough to work out," Holland said. "The doctor who saw him said he is day-to-day and hopefully he'll be better in a few days."

Red Wings looking for good start, improvement

While the Stars were talking about taking it one game at time on Tuesday and getting off to a good start, the Red Wings were talking about a good start as well, and weathering a storm in Game 4.

We know it's a very important start," said forward Dallas Drake. "They are going to come hard at us. We've got to weather the storm the way we did [Monday] night. The hardest game to win is that fourth one and they are going to be very desperate. "

And the Stars will be desperate to get the lead, something they haven't had in the series. Defenseman Niklas Kronwall said the Red Wings want to avoid sitting back and letting the Stars take the play to them on Wednesday night.

"We've just got to keep going like we have and weather the storm," Kronwall said. "Go after them as much as possible instead of sitting back."

"They’re going to have a huge push, we understand that totally, said coach Mike Babcock. "In saying that, we have to push them as hard as we’ve pushed them all series, and harder. And we’re optimistic. We’re capable of doing that. So we’re going to prepare hard, and then try to play real well."

And to avoid complacency the Red Wings said they are looking for improvement over Game 3. It's something goalie Chris Osgood said is an ongoing process with the Red Wings - they always look to be better.

We don't want to give them any life," Osgood said. "We want to play real good the next game, make that our best game in the playoffs so far."

Babcock staying in Detroit

Red Wings coach Mike Babcock's contract expires at the end of this season, but he made it clear Tuesday that he is staying in Detroit.

"I’m staying in Detroit. I mean we’ll get all that worked out," Babcock said when asked about his contract status. "I’m optimistic. No, I know that we’ll get it worked out and it’s just some details, that’s all."
