Game 4 Notebook: Holmstrom's play at the crease takes center stage again Thursday, May 15, 2008 Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom's play at the crease took center stage again Wednesday night, and this time he and the Red Wings ended up on the short end of the call. About seven-and-a-half minutes into the second period the Red Wings appeared to score on a Pavel Datsyuk shot to take a 1-0 lead in the game. But the goal was waved off by referee Kelly Sutherland, who ruled that Holmstrom was in the crease and interfered with Stars goalie Marty Turco. Replays appeared to show that Holmstrom was outside the crease. "I've seen it on TV and I was clearly outside," said Holmstrom. "It was a bad call." Detroit coach Mike Babcock said Holmstrom is a target for the referees because he has a history for interference calls. "That's a reputation call totally. It's disappointing," said Babcock. "Sometimes a guy gets tripped and you miss it. Some things go wrong, and you miss it. Just don't make stuff up. "Kelly Sutherland is a good referee, he just blew the call. That's life." Turco saw it a little differently. "I couldn't move freely to make that save on the shot," Turco said. "I really don't think it's a bad call. I don't think it's black-and-white like it used to be. It's the referee's discretion." In Game 1, Holmstrom was clearly in the crease and interfered with Turco on a Detroit call and no call was made. The goal stood on that one." "Some bounces go for you and some go against you," said Stars coach Dave Tippett. "Tonight we got it to go for us." Detroit forward Henrik Zetterberg said although the call was getting a lot of attention after the game, it wasn't a game-deciding play. "I don't think the loss came on that call," said Zetterberg. Stars juggle lines, Petersen gets bigger role The Stars juggled their lines for Wednesday's game. Mike Modano and Brad Richards played together on a line with Niklas Hagman. Antti Miettinen moved into the right wing spot on the top line with Mike Ribeiro and Brenden Morrow. Toby Petersen moved into the center spot with Loui Eriksson and Joel Lundqvist on the wings. That trio went head-to-head a lot with the Red Wings' top line of Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom. "Obviously it was just to control the puck," Petersen said of the of goal against the Detroit line. "You want to keep off their sticks as much as you can." Petersen played 19:56 in the game. His previous high in this season's playoffs had been 14:16. "Petersen's was excellent for us. They were very, very good," said Stars coach Dave Tippett. "They played with a ton of speed." There were also some new defensive pairings for the Stars. Nicklas Grossman and Sergei Zubov remained a pair, but Mattias Norstrom and Stephane Robidas played a lot together. Matt Niskanen and Trevor Daley were the third pairing. Franzen cleared for light workouts Detroit forward Johan Franzen, who has missed the last two games with concussion-like symptoms, has been cleared by doctors to start light workouts. "He's been given the green light to start doing a few things," Detroit GM Holland told the Detroit Free Press. "Nothing major, just riding the bike a little bit. We'll continue to monitor the headaches and we'll see how he responds." There is still no timetable for a Franzen to return to action and his status remains day-to-day. Jere Lehtinen (leg), Stu Barnes (concussion-like symptoms) and Philippe Boucher (hip) were all out for the Stars Wednesday night. Notes
Quotable "I felt shame, like Slapshot said. It was desperate times. It's tough to sit in there." Stars captain Brenden Morrow on taking a delay of game penalty with 2:17 left in the game.
