Notes: Holmstrom vows Friday, May 16, 2008 His play around the crease has become the focus of attention in the Western Conference Final and the league has said it is watching, but Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom vowed to play the way he always does. "No," Holmstrom answered when asked if he would change his approach for Saturday's Game 5. "I have to go to the net, do my job around the net." Holmstrom's play around the net cost the Red Wings a goal in Game 4 when it was ruled that he kept Stars goalie Marty Turco from being able to do his job. "It's not going to change anything," Holmstrom said of that call. "It was a good goal. Everything happen so fast. But, you know, it's bad when it has to happen in the playoffs." And while Holmstrom said he gets blamed for violating the crease and is sometimes told by the referees to get out of there, he's got his side of the story. "It's not that easy. You get pushed in. Seems likes defensemen, they can do it more than I can do it around the net," he said. "I get pushed in, then it's my fault, into the crease. Have to see how I get there, too. I think the goalies are pretty good, too, to fake when they get hit and stuff like that. Of course, they have their blue paint to be in. But, you know, sometimes they fake it well, too." Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said he's ready to move on from the Game 4 incident, but he added that his team won't back off from trying to get to the net to create chances. "I mean, we're going to the net, and we're going to go there as hard as we can. Never got to the net enough last game," Babcock said. "That's always been our focus as far as getting prepared in one area. That's what we try to do and we'll continue to do that. "It's over with and done with now, though. We're moving on. But he's going right back to the spot. He did it right. Any way you look at it, they'll do a video this summer, they'll say, this is how to do it right. They'll have that clip on it." Secondary scoring With Johan Franzen, who has 12 playoff goals, out of the mix due to injury, the Red Wings have become almost a one-line team as far as scoring in the Western Conference Finals. The top line of Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom have been on the ice for eight of the team's 12 goals in the series. The second line, which features Dan Cleary, who moved up to replace Franzen, Valtteri Filppula and Mikael Samuelsson has not factored in the scoring in the three games they've been together. That led to a question Friday if the Red Wings need more from the second line. "No, I thought they fit in good with our team last game, which we were all the same. Prior to that, they've been excellent," said coach Mike Babcock. "I think they have got good players, they're playing against good people. I've been real impressed with Filppula. Sammy was leading us in finished checks in the first three games. Didn't get much done last game in that area. "I just think they got to keep going about their business. It's a grind. I don't think anyone at the start of the series picked, say, this line here is going to carry the whole thing. That's not how it works. Datsyuk and Zetterberg weren't the same as they were the game before. That's part to do with them, that's part to do with the other team. That's just how it goes. That's what it is in team sport, we have to pick one another up." Said captain Nicklas Lidstrom: "You can't rely on that first line all the time. You have to have other players step up. We had that previous years in the first couple games, as well. You have to find ways to get more pucks to the net, create more scoring chances that way." Power outage The Red Wings' power play has struggled since scoring three times in the first game of the series. The Stars' penalty kill has limited it to just one goal in 15 attempts over the last three games. "I think our entry hasn't been as good as it was the first couple games. They're playing real well through the neutral zone," said captain Nicklas Lidstrom. "Once we get in, I think we had some chances in that last game. We have to have more motion on the power play. If we're standing still, not passing the puck around, we have to have some more motion." Injury update F Johan Franzen (concussion-like symptoms) did not skate Friday and is out for Game 5. F Valtteri Filppula (leg) did not skate Friday, but is expected to play on Saturday. Quotable "Yeah (laughter). Campbell's soup from now on." Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom, when asked if he had heard enough talk about his backside over the past two days Quotable II "We're excited about playing tomorrow. It's been a good situation for us in the fact we're coming home to play in our building. We're excited about it. We think we can be way better. Not 'think', we know we can be way better than we were last game. So that's what we have to do." Red Wings coach Mike Babcock
