Stars make it official: DiMaio, Sweeney will return

Tuesday, June 15, 2004

The Dallas Stars made it official Monday -- forward Rob DiMaio and defenseman Don Sweeney will be back next season. If there is a season that is. Both have signed one-year contracts.

"Both Rob and Don exhibit strong leadership qualities and provide a veteran presence in our locker room," Stars general manager Doug Armstrong said in a press release.

Both players will make $550,000 next season. That's what Sweeney made last season, but it is a drop from the $800,000 DiMaio made in 2003-04. Incentive clauses could push each contract to $600,000.

Here's a look at the contract status for players in the Stars' organization. Restricted free agents who are not tendered qualifying offers by June 30 will become unrestricted free agents.

The official free agent list will be released on July 1

Stars prospect subject of battery lawsuit

Defenseman Matt Nickerson, who signed a three-year contract with the Stars recently, is the subject of a $3 million dollar battery lawsuit in New York state. The civil suit was filed in state Supreme Court in Canton, New York by Monique Gagner.

Both Nickerson and Gagner were students and hockey players at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York. Gagner was among the women recruited to be part of Clarkson's first women's hockey team. She didn't play last season due to a back injury that was not related to the alleged assault.

Neither she nor her lawyer would go into details about the allegations.

"I don't think I am allowed to talk about it," Gagner told the Watertown Daily Times, adding that she was uncomfortable talking about what she called the sexual nature of the assault.

Nickerson, who is apparently playing hockey in Finland, could not be reached for comment. His mother, Ann, did speak to the Watertown Daily Times.

"I don't believe Matthew was ever alone with her," Mrs. Nickerson told the newspaper. "She kept following him around the campus."

She also said she had heard reports that Gagner was going take legal action against her son.

"We kept hearing rumors, but we were never served with anything," she told the Daily Times.

Nickerson, who used to play for the Texas Tornado, was taken by the Stars in the third round (99th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
