Stars acquire forward from 'Canes

Tuesday, June 29, 2004

The Dallas Stars Tuesday acquired 24-year-old forward Jaroslav Svoboda from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a fourth round draft pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

"Jaroslav is still a young hockey player and has already been through a long playoff run with Carolina in 2002," Stars GM Doug Armstrong said in a news release. "He brings our hockey club more size and we look forward to the energy he will add to the Dallas Stars in 2004-05."

Svoboda, who can play either right wing or left wing, is a restricted free agent and made $500,000 last season. He played 33 games for Carolina, picking up three goals, one assist and a plus-three rating. He has eight goals, 14 assists and a minus-two rating in 91 career NHL games, all with Carolina.

The 6-2, 190-pound Czech native was selected by Carolina in the seventh round (208th overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

Scouting Report
Considered a very talented playmaking forward who can play either right wing or left wing. He's bulked up in the weight department over the the past couple years and that has made him an effective player in the corners. Is considered a responsible player defensively. Despite his abilities there have been questions about his offensive consistency at the professional level.
