Avs tops Stars 4-2

Saturday, September 17, 2005

The Dallas Stars opened the 2005 pre-season with a 4-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche in Denver Saturday night. Jussi Jokinen scored both goals for the Stars, who will play Edmonton Sunday night.

After Colorado took a 2-0 lead on goals by Joe Sakic and Patrice Brisebois, Jokinen scored two second period goals to pull the Stars even.

After taking a pass from Mike Modano, Jokinen skated in on net and beat Avalanche goalie Peter Budaj with a backhand shot at 4:22 of the second period.

A little more than five minutes later, Jokinen struck again with an unassisted goal. After stealing the puck, he beat Budaj with a backhand shot to tie the game at 2-2.

But Sakic scored the game winner with the Avalanche on a five-on-three power play. Both Yared Hagos and Jaroslav Svoboda were in the penalty box at the time.  Colorado added an empty net goal to round out the scoring.

Notes

Colorado outshot the Stars 34-23.

The Stars were 0-7 on the power play. Colorado scored on two of nine chances.

Johan Hedberg started in goal for the Stars, stopping 22 of 24 shots over two periods. Dan Ellis took over in the third period and stopped eight of nine shots.

In the post-game shootout, the Stars scored on two of three shots and Colorado was 0-3. Vojtech Polak and Jokinen cashed in on their chances and Mike Modano missed his.
