Stars power past Oilers 6-4
Tuesday, September 20, 2005
Bill Guerin scored two goals and Mike Modano notched the
game-winner as the Dallas Stars beat the Edmonton Oilers 6-4 at
the American Airlines Center Tuesday night. Jussi Jokinen, Stu
Barnes and Martin Skoula also scored for the Stars, who improved
to 2-1-0 on the pre-season.
Jason Arnott chipped in four assists.
Marty Turco, making his first appearance of the pre-season,
played the entire game in goal for the Stars, stopping 18 of 22
shots.
The Stars got off to a quick start when Jokinen scored on a slap
shot from just outside the top of the left faceoff circle 1:22
into the game.
The Oilers bounced back with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead.
Jarret Stoll beat Marty Turco five-hole at 4:03 of the first and
then Robbie Schremp scored a power play goal off a rebound at
the 6:54 mark.
The Stars drew even at 15:30 when Antti Miettinen set up Guerin,
who scored into the open side of the net from point blank range.
Stoll scored again for the Oilers at 18:49 of the second period
when his shot went by Turco, who was screened by Ryan Smyth.
That left Edmonton leading 3-2 after the first 20 minutes.
The Stars pulled even just under six minutes into the second
period when Vojtech Polak set up Barnes, who scored a power play
goal from a sharp angle.
Ex-Star Todd Harvey put Edmonton up at 9:04 of the second period
when he scored after the Stars turned over the puck in their own
end.
But a little more than three minutes later Skoula tied the game
for the Stars with a blast from just inside the blue line.
The Stars scored two power play goals in a 3:07 span of the
third period to take control of the game. The first one came
when Modano scored off the rebound of a Guerin shot at the 5:23
mark.
Guerin notched his second goal of the game when, stationed by
the side of the net, he took a pass from Jason Arnott and
whipped it into the net.
The Oilers had a chance to cut the lead to 6-5, but Turco came
up with a great diving save on Oilers forward Fernando Pisani.
