Goodenow says no progress; league says no comment on status of the season

Friday, February 04, 2005

Talks between the NHL and NHLPA ended after four hours on Friday and the news was not good. NHLPA chief Bob Goodenow said no progress was made over the past two days of talks, which totaled 13 hours, and no new meetings were currently planned. The NHL's Bill Daly called the talks "constructive," and added the league would have no announcement on the status of the season.

"We met the last couple of days, tried to cover some issues and maybe a few new issues to see if there was a possibility of some common ground and some traction, but that isn't the case," Goodenow was quoted as saying by the Canadian Press. "The parties agreed to stay in touch but there's really no progress to report of any type. That's the reality."

Friday's talks started at 11 a.m. in New York and ended at 3 p.m. They followed a nine-hour session on Thursday between the NHLPA contingent led by Goodenow and the league group led by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.

Daly, the league's executive vice-president and chief legal counsel released this statement shortly after the talks concluded.

"We had extensive and constructive talks over the past two days. While there are no future meetings scheduled, we have agreed to keep the lines of communication open," Daly said. "Despite several media reports to the contrary, we have no intention of making any further announcement relating to collective bargaining or the status of the season at this time."
