Two sides meet, will meet again

Friday, August 31, 2007

The NHL and NHLPA met for about 90 minutes in Toronto Friday and agreed to meet again some time next week. No new proposals were made in the meeting, which was characterized as a general discussion by NHLPA executive director Bob Goodenow.

"It was a start of a new chain of discussions that hopefully will lead to some progress," Goodenow told the Canadian Press. "It was a general conversation, no specific components or concepts were delved into.

"It's fair to say people have to get a fresh look at all the issues given what's transpired here. I don't think it serves a purpose to be specific on any one component, but to say that things have changed from both sides' perspective is fair."

The NHL's Bill Daly released this statement on the talks: "We met with the NHL Players' Association today in Toronto for approximately 1 1/2 hours. No progress was made towards a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. The parties have agreed to meet again next week."

Daly was joined by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, general counsel David Zimmerman and outside counsel Bob Batterman.

Along with Goodenow, the NHLPA was represented by senior director Ted Saskin, associate counsel Ian Pulver and outside counsel John McCambridge.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Goodenow wouldn't say whether the talks were back to square one.

"I wouldn't even want to characterize it," Goodenow said. "I think we just talked about where we are. We didn't get into any specifics."
