Meeting ends after 14 hoursFriday, August 31, 2007 Talks between the NHL and NHLPA Thursday lasted for 14 hours, but how much progress was made, if any, was not immediately known. Neither side was commenting immediately after the talks ended. The Canadian Press quoted a source as saying little progress was made, but that there was healthy discussion on several topics. The CP also reported that the two sides would talk Friday to make arrangements for the next round of meetings. The two sides started talking Thursday about 10 a.m. EDT and called it a night just before midnight. The long session followed two days of small group meetings where the sides went over accounting and financial issues relating to teams and their revenues. Thursday's meetings involved large groups on both sides as the league and PA try to hammer out the details of a salary cap system where the upper and lower team payroll levels would move up or down based on the year-by-year rise or decline in overall league revenues.
Representing the league were commissioner Gary Bettman, chief
legal officer Bill Daly, director of hockey operations Colin
Campbell, NHL general counsel David Zimmerman, board of
governors chairman Harley Hotchkiss of the Calgary Flames, New
Jersey Devils CEO and GM Lou Lamoriello, Boston Bruins owner
Jeremy Jacobs, Nashville Predators owner Craig Leipold, outside
counsel Bob Batterman and lawyer Shep Goldfein.
