NHL cites more progress as Chicago meetings wrap up

 Friday, August 31, 2007

The NHL said more progress was made as it ended two days of meetings with the NHLPA in Chicago on Thursday.

"Further progress was made in reviewing and discussing League and Club financial and accounting issues. The parties intend to meet again next week," NHL chief legal officer Bill Daly said in a statement after the talks concluded.

NHLPA senior director Ted Saskin offered this take in a Players' Association release: "We just completed two days of meetings focused on revenue measurement and reporting issues. There is a lot more information to be exchanged between the parties and I expect Bob and Gary will be scheduling further meetings shortly."

The meetings wrap up as reports are beginning to surface that the league and the PA are inching towards an agreement to settle the lockout, which is now in its ninth month.

The Ottawa Sun quoted an NHL source as saying the two sides are the "closest they've ever been", but that there is still a lot of work to be done.

"There are a lot of players who don't want to see this stretch into next year and they don't see any point in having it go into next year. They've fought the good fight, but the battle has been lost," the league source told the Ottawa Sun.

"Now, they're of the opinion that the union should just try to get the best deal possible and move on with this. I would say right now the union is trying to find a way to say they saved face in this negotiation."
