Two sides meet for about three hours

Friday, August 31, 2007

The National Hockey League and NHLPA met for about three-and-a-half hours in Toronto Thursday. It was the first formal negotiating session between the two sides since April 19.

Neither side was saying much after the talks, which are scheduled to resume tomorrow morning in Toronto.

The league released this statement Thursday afternoon: "Representatives of the NHL and NHL Players' Association met for 3-1/2 hours today in Toronto and will reconvene tomorrow morning. Accordingly, there will be no general statement to the media today. It is expected that a statement will be issued following tomorrow's session."

The NHLPA had even less to say, releasing this statement: "NHLPA and NHL representatives met for approximately 3-1/2 hours today in Toronto. Talks will continue tomorrow morning."

The two sides are hoping to meet at least twice a week until an agreement is reached on a new CBA. Talks could be held next week in Austria, where the World Championship is currently being played.
