Two sides wrap up talks, hope to meet again next week

The NHL and NHLPA followed up Thursday's three-and-a-half hour session with a four-and-a-half hour session in Toronto on Friday. There were no reports of progress in the talks, but the two sides could meet again next week.

"We met for approximately 3-1/2 hours yesterday and for approximately 4-1/2 today and further discussed the conceptual framework first raised at our April 4 meeting," NHL chief legal officer Bill Daly said in a statement. "Both sides intend to spend the next several days continuing to work internally, and at this point, we are hoping to meet again in New York on Tuesday, May 10."

The concept is a system with a team-by-team salary cap and a salary floor that would be adjusted up or down depending on league revenues.

It would not, however, limit players to a fixed percentage of NHL revenues as the league had originally proposed.

There are still apparently big differences in the numbers the two sides are proposing. The PA has apparently proposed a cap of $50 million and a floor of $30 million. The league wants a significantly lower cap and a smaller cap between the cap and floor figures.

There are still other key issues to be resolved including revenue sharing and salary arbitration just to name a couple.
