The Iowa Stars won three of four over the past week, including two straight after another embarrassing loss.

After beating Quad City 4-1, Iowa was routed 8-3 by Peoria in Des Moines. That led coach Dave Allison to rip the troops.

The Stars bounced back with a 3-2 win in Peoria two days later and then beat Houston to round out the calendar year.

"So much of it is just the simplicity of being able to step up," Stars coach Dave Allison told the Des Moines Register after the win over Houston. "We really talked about it and I think soul-searched after that 8-3 loss, that there's a few things we've got to get better at, and first is our own zone and creating territory, because we can skate. I think that those guys really did that and consequently we had some great looks. We had 2-on-1s. We had battles. We had grittiness, and it was a fun game to play because we played with a purpose."

With the two straight wins to end the calendar year the Stars are now 17-17-1-1, but remain in eighth place in the eight-team West Division.

Pushkarev returns
Forward Konstantin Pushkarev, who left the team in early November to play in the Russian Super League, returned over the weekend. His suspension was lifted Monday afternoon and a couple of hours later he hit the ice when the Stars took on the Houston Aeros in Des Moines. Pushkarev picked up an assist in the game.

"We're glad to have him back," Iowa director of hockey operations Scott White told the Des Moines Register. "I guess, in my eyes, the grass isn't always greener. He wanted to come back. He likes it in our system and likes playing in our group."

Pushkarev played five games for CSKA in the RSL, picking up one assist.

Injury update
Here are the latest injuries for the Iowa Stars:
  • F Perttu Lindgren (tooth): Missed one game
  • F James Neal (knee): Missed one game
  • F Aaron Gagnon (shoulder): Missed seven games
  • F Tom Wandell (ribs): Out since late November
Notes
  • Marty Sertich has three goals over the last two games.
  • Toby Petersen has three goals and two assists over the last five games.
  • B.J. Crombeen has scored all six of goals this season over the last 13 games.
