The city of Cedar
Park last week approved a deal with the Dallas Stars to build a new
arena in that city and bring the Stars' AHL affiliate to that city,
which is near Austin, by 2010.
Hicks Sports
Marketing Group will pay $12 million of the $55 million cost, including
$10 million towards construction and another $2 million towards
purchasing adjacent land to develop into retail and office space. The
Hicks Group also has the right to sell naming rights to the facility as
long as Cedar Park is used in the name.
The Stars affiliate
in Cedar Park will be called the Texas Stars.
The ownership in
Iowa, the current home of the Dallas affiliate, is expected to land a
new NHL affiliation down the road.
"There is no threat
of the American Hockey League leaving Des Moines," Kirby Schlegel,
co-owner of the Iowa Stars, told the Des Moines Register.
Schlegel told the
Register the team may come up with a new nickname and team colors to
establish its own identity as early as next season.
"Co-branding
ourselves with a team over which we didn't have any control was
something that we should have done differently," Schlegel said.
