The Iowa Stars wrapped up the regular season over the
past week, winning one of their final four games.
The Stars finished the season 35-37-5-3 and in eighth place in
the West Division. They missed the playoffs for the first time in their
three-year history.
But the Dallas Stars were happy with the development of
players in Iowa. Two of the team's defensemen that started the season there -
Nicklas Grossman and Mark Fistric - were regular players down the stretch in the
NHL.
"I think they are probably disappointed we're not going to the
postseason, but when you look at the players they've put into the NHL, you've
got to say, 'Wow, they've done a good job,' " Dallas Stars co-GM Les Jackson
told the Des Moines Register. "We basically depleted their whole defense here.
... I think overall organizationally we've developed players, and that's what
we're here for."
Forward B.J. Crombeen and veteran center Toby Petersen, who
spent most of the season in Iowa, are both currently members of Dallas' fourth
line in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Plus, goalie Tobias Stephan put together a solid season in
Iowa and is expected to get a look as Marty Turco's backup next season.
"He's on the right path," Iowa director of hockey operations
Scott White told the Register about Stephan. "He's done what he's had to do. It will be up to
him if he seizes that opportunity, but I think he'll have a good chance.
Obviously we'll have to address our goaltending here as well. We're going to
have Matt Climie, but we're going to need another goalie too." |
