Prospect update:
Ivan Vishnevskiy
Wednesday, October 17, 2007
Here's an update on prospect Ivan Vishnevskiy,
the Russian defenseman the Stars took in the first round of the
2006 NHL Entry Draft.
Vishnevskiy, the 27th overall pick last summer,
had a solid season with
Rouyn-Noranda of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
He had 14 goals, 37 assists and a plus-nine rating in 60 games.
The points ranked second for defensemen on the team.
He had 13 points (five goals,
eight assists) in 16 playoff games as his team lost in the East
Division finals to eventual QMJHL champion Lewiston.
He draws high praise from his coach, André
Tourigny.
"He has all the tools to be an NHL player,"
Tourigny said. "He's a fast, powerful skater. I have do doubt he
will have NHL success."
The 19-year-old Russian, a gifted offensive
defenseman, continues to work in a couple of areas.
On the ice Vishnevskiy is learning to be a more
disciplined player both with and without the puck.
"I was like get the puck and go everywhere with
it or I tried to get the puck sometimes and I followed everybody
that had it," Vishnevskiy told McKeen's Hockey Prospects. "The
coach told me to move a little less and that would be okay for a
first step. After, he made me watch a lot of video of what I
must do and I learned and learned. Now it's much better."
Off the ice he continues to lift weights to add
some bulk to his frame. He is currently listed as 6-0, 180
pounds.

games playing for Russia in the Canada-Russia Challenge. He was named
the QMJHL's Defensive Player of the Week for March 5-11. |
| Background |
| Played his first season in North American in 2005-06, scoring 13
goals and chipping in 35 assists in 54 games for Rouyn-Noranda of the
QMJHL. Nine of his goals came on the power play. Was named to the
QMJHL's Rookie All-Star team. ... Was ranked 32nd among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting
for the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. Was ranked 25th overall by Red Line Report
and 29th overall by International Scouting Services.... Had 71 points
(39 goals, 32 assists) in 50 games playing in third level of Russian
hockey in 2004-05. |
| Scouting Report |
| Considered a purely offensive defenseman in the Sergei Gonchar or
Sandis Ozolinsh mold. He continues to work on his defensive game. Possibly the best pure skater in the
2006 draft. He has
superb speed and great acceleration. Carries the puck well and can do it
at top speed to back off defenders. Has a good shot, including a very
good one-timer. Is very effective on the power play, which is considered
his specialty. Continues to work on adding some bulk to his frame. |
| Quotable |
Likely the best pure skater in this entire draft with speed,
agility, balance and acceleration. The ultimate in high risk/high reward
defensemen. Terrific talent level -- brain is a huge question mark....
Projection: Erratic #3-4 defenseman and PP specialist.
Style compares to: Phil Housely
Red Line Report
The team that drafts him will do so with one thing in mind – to
generate offense. He is extremely agile and mobile and loves to jump
into the rush to create offense. His offensive tendencies can create
some defensive concerns but his foot speed allows him to recover most of
the time.
NHL Potential: PP Quarterback. Must prove he can run an offense in
order to make an impact in the NHL. Style compares to: Oleg Tverdovsky.
