Prospects Update: Memorial Cup Watch

Sunday, May 25, 2008

Stars prospect Ondrej Roman picked up a key assist as his Spokane Chiefs beat the Kitchener Rangers 4-1 Sunday  to win the Memorial Cup.

With Spokane trailing late 1-0 late in the first period and on the power play, the speedy Roman skated along the left boards in the Rangers' zone, circled behind the net and centered the puck to linemate Judd Blackwater, who scored to tie the game.

"I saw the defenseman skating backward and thought I could beat him with my speed," Roman said. "Judd just stepped to the first post and yelled for the puck. It was a great play by him and I think a huge goal after they scored first."

It was a key goal that shifted momentum towards the Chiefs, who scored two more times in  the second period to take control of the game.

The Chiefs, the champions of the Western Hockey League, went 4-0 at the Memorial Cup and beat host team Kitchener twice in their own barn.

Spokane goalie Dustin Tokarski, who made 53 saves Sunday, was the tournament MVP.

Roman, a fifth round pick in 2007, ended up with two assists in four games. Stars prospect Michael Neal, whose Belleville team was eliminated from the tournament Friday night, had no points in two games.
