With one week to go before the Dallas Stars open training camp some of their prospects were getting down to business Friday night. Dallas prospects opened play in Traverse City with a loss to Minnesota Wild prospects. 2007 draft pick Nico Sacchetti scored as his USHL team knocked off a Canadian junior team and Dallas native Austin Smith, another 2007 draft pick, made his junior hockey debut in Canada.

Stars prospects lose Traverse City opener 5-1

Stars prospects lost their opening game of the Traverse City, Michigan Tournament, falling 5-1 to the Minnesota Wild. Alexander Naurov (4th round pick/2003) scored the lone goal for the Stars with Matt Nickerson picking up the lone assist.

Tobias Stephan stopped 18 of 20 shots in 28:01 of playing time. Tryout goalie J-C Blanchard allowed three goals on 13 shots in 31:59 of playing time.

Dallas plays St. Louis on Saturday. The Blues beat Columbus 6-4 on Friday. In other games, the New York Rangers topped Tampa Bay 6-4 and Atlanta beat Detroit 3-2.

Sacchetti notches goal in Canadian tournament

Center Nico Sacchetti, the Stars second round pick (50th overall) got his first taste of junior hockey on two fronts. His USHL team, the Omaha Lancers, played an exhibition game against the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Friday night.

Sacchetti scored late in the first period to give Omaha a 1-0 lead. The 18-year-old center also had four shots on goal, won  six of 20 faceoffs and a team-high five hits.

Both Omaha and the Indiana Ice of the USHL are playing in the CCM Junior Classic in Quebec this weekend. Omaha plays Rimouski of the QMJHL Saturday evening.

Earlier in the week Sacchetti scored two goals as a Omaha beat Indiana 5-4 in a tune-up game for the CCM Junior Classic.

Smith BCHL debut

Dallas native Austin Smith, a fifth round pick (128th overall) by the Stars this past summer, made his regular season debut with the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League Friday night. The 18-year-old center had no points and no penalty minutes, but got a couple of good looks on the power play as the Vees beat the Westside Warriors 5-3

Super series update: Vishnevskiy sits as Russia and Canada play to tie

Stars prospect Ivan Vishnevskiy did not play Friday as Canada and Russia played to a 4-4 tie in the seventh game of the Canada/Russia Super Series. Canada now leads the series 6-0-1. The final game in the series is Sunday in Vancouver.
