Andrew's FAQ

1. Who is Andrew?

Andrew is the oldest son of Mark, the guy who runs Andrew's Dallas Stars Page. Mark named the site after Andrew when the site was launched several years ago.

2. Who is Mark?

Mark Stepneski is a long-time hockey fan who was born in Binghamton, New York and grew up a fan of the Boston Bruins. In those days there was no ESPN and no Internet, so he spent a lot of nights listening to Bob Wilson call Bruins games on WBZ radio. There were also Rangers games on TV, which were spiced up with the commentary of Bill "The Big Whistle" Chadwick. Mark also had season tickets to a minor league team called the Broome Dusters, who played in what was then the NAHL.

Mark moved to Texas to go to college and, after a brief stint in the cable TV business, landed a job at the NBC affiliate in Dallas/Fort Worth. He held various positions there including videotape editor, writer, producer and eventually special projects producer. Among the events he covered were the 1984 Republican Convention, Papal Visit to San Antonio in 1987, New Hampshire Primary in 1988, President George Bush on election night in 1992, the Waco Standoff in 1993, both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions in 1996. There were also the Dallas Cowboys Super Bowls in one capacity or another and the Dallas Stars Stanley Cup victory parade in 1999.  There were plenty of disasters like tornadoes, plane crashes and other events as well.

He also produced some interview programs that featured guests such as George W. Bush when he was Texas Governor, Stanley Marcus of Neiman-Marcus fame, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Willie Nelson.

Mark has also won a few awards and nominations. He won a couple Texas Associated Press Awards for documentaries on weather, a regional Edward R. Murrow award for a documentary on race relations and a Dallas Press Club award for editing on a series about Texas education. There were a couple of regional Emmy nominations for the race relations broadcast and weather documentaries as well along with a couple of other Dallas Press Club nominations, including one for a series of political candidate forums.

Mark left the NBC affiliate a few years ago to do freelance work and to pursue some personal business interests. There was also an interest in spending more time with his family.

3. Who writes the material for Andrew's

Unless otherwise noted, Mark does. There may be an occasional story written by someone else and that will be noted in the introduction of the story and the author will get a byline as well.

4. How long has Andrew's been on line?

Andrew's was launched during the 1996-97 season as simply a page of links to newspapers and national media sites. It was on line before the Stars even had an official site. The addition of news stories began during the 1997-98 when Mark realized there was a void in constantly updated Stars news on the web, especially breaking news. Except for a few blips here and there, the site has been updated year round ever since.
