Stars goalie Marty Turco joined BaD Radio this afternoon in studio from Buffalo. Turco talked to Bob and Dan, who are traveling with the team, about last night’s big win in Washington, his play the past couple seasons, his not returning to the bench after getting pulled last week and his future with the club. The interview was done over two segments, but I reduced it into one file, which is about 23 minutes in length. Here’s the audio:

NHL.com story on Bachman

NHL.com has a story up today on Stars goaltending prospect Richard Bachman:

When he wants to get away from it all during the summer, Richard Bachman’s preferred method of escape is to load up his Ford F-150 and drive deep in the Colorado wilderness for some camping, hiking and fishing.

“There’s something about being out in nature,” he said. “You get away from the lights and noise. It takes you away from the TV, cell phones. I get enough of that 10 months of the year.”

Friends are welcome, but with one condition: there is a lot of down time to be filled with conversation, and Bachman would rather not talk about hockey.

“Everyone is always asking how hockey is going,” he said. “I’ll answer the questions and stuff, but I won’t try to keep the conversation going. There’s always something to be asked.”

And this season, Bachman keeps coming up with the right answer to the biggest query of all: does he have a place in the brimming basket of Dallas Stars’ goaltending prospects?

Tuesday morning playoff race update

The Stars were only team in the race for those final playoff spots in action last night. With the big win over the Capitals, they moved to within five points of Nashville, four points of Detroit and three of Calgary. They also moved one point ahead of St. Louis and into 10th place.

They'll lose some ground tonight because Calgary plays at Detroit, so one of those teams will pick up points. So when they play Buffalo tomorrow night, they will be five or six points out of the final spot depending on the outcome of tonight's games. Other key games tonight are Nashville at Atlanta, Anaheim vs. Columbus and Minnesota vs. Florida.

Stars-Capitals thoughts

Big win, obviously and a big two points. Marty Turco was the difference maker. He was brilliant. He kept them in the game through the first two periods, stopping 40 of 42 shots and there were a lot of sharp saves and he did a nice job of controlling things when the play got close around his net.

As lopsided as the shots were through the first two periods (42-16), the Stars were still hanging around the game. They even had some pretty good chances early in the game, but just couldn’t finish them off. Brenden Morrow had one and Loui Eriksson had a couple.

When it’s a 2-0 game that third goal is huge and when the trailing team can get it the entire complexion of the game can change, regardless of what’s happened leading up to the 2-0 score. When Brad Richards scored on that power play, the momentum shifted big time. The Stars got life and the huge shot differential became irrelevant. It was a one shot game. Another power play, Trevor Daley scores and it’s a tie game, back to square one basically.

On the power play, it was pretty simple. Pucks and people to the net. Both times the puck got through the people and past the goalie. Nothing fancy on either one.

In the grand scheme of things, who knows what this game will mean. What happens down the road will dictate that. Right now it’s a big win and two crucial points the Stars desperately needed to keep pace in the playoff race. It should also be a shot of confidence for a team that needed some after getting lit up in its first three games out of the Olympic break. They bent a little in Washington, but they didn’t break. They rebounded nicely and rallied to beat the best home team in the NHL. There’s nothing like some confidence. We’ll see how it goes Wednesday in Buffalo. The Stars have a chance to make this a very successful road trip leading up to the six-game homestand that follows.

Quick Stars-Capitals thoughts

Quick thoughts on tonight's game. I won't say it's the biggest win of the year because we don't know what's ahead and there's a lot of hockey to play, but that was big. Really big. Marty Turco was sensational, making a regular season career-high 49 saves. Coming back from down 2-0 in Washington to win should be a big confidence boost moving forward and confidence can do wonders for a team. Still a long ways to go, but this is a step in the right direction. We'll see what happens in Buffalo Wednesday night.

Stars coach Marc Crawford was on BaD Radio this afternoon. Bob and Dan, who are traveling with the team on this current road trip, talked to Crawford about the team’s struggles, his trying to keep things positive and more. Here’s the audio.

Turco tonight

I don't think this is a surprise, but Marty Turco will start in goal tonight for the Stars. It looks like Semyon Varlamov will get the nod in net for the Capitals.

Big points tonight

Monday, March 08, 2010-9:40:am
/Andrew's Dallas Stars Page

I'm not going to say tonight's game is the biggest of the year because who knows what's ahead, but it's big. The Stars have slipped in the standings due to their 0-3-0 slide out of the break and are starting to put themselves in a tough spot in the playoff race. Both Detroit and Calgary won yesterday, leaving the Stars six points behind the Red Wings and five points behind Calgary. Nashville's another team to keep an eye on, and the Stars are seven points behind the Predators.

The Stars have a game in hand on all those teams and that game is tonight. They need the points, especially because of what happens on Tuesday. Calgary is at Detroit on that night and that means one of those two teams is guaranteed to move even farther ahead of the Stars and leave them in even a bigger hole as far as the eighth spot.

It won't be an easy task tonight. Washington has the best record in the league, is dominant at home and is the the highest scoring team in the league (3.89 goals per game). The Stars, on the other hand, are a team that looks in disarray right now, giving up 17 goals in the last three games. The issues are well documented. Can they turn it around? Sure. Will they? Time will tell and tonight will, well, be telling.

The Stars are the only team in the race around that final spot playing tonight.
