The second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs start in a couple hours and it’s time to make some picks. I don’t think predictions are that big a deal. They are fun, but don’t mean much. I got 7 of 8 series right in the first round, but it’s not as impressive as it seems. I missed the San Jose-Anaheim series and since I picked the Sharks coming out of the West, that screwed up my whole little prediction bracket. Maggie the Monkey got the Sharks series wrong too and quite a few others too.

Anyway, I am picking Vancouver over Chicago in six games, and I’ll go with Detroit over Anaheim in seven. I think the Canucks are just clicking in all areas right now, have the game’s best goalie. I think they will be a little too much for the Blackhawks. I think the Ducks will give the Red Wings a run for their money because of their top notch blue line and my expectation that Jonas Hiller will continue to play well for them in goal. But I think Detroit looks as strong as ever right now and it looks like they really tightened up the defense for the playoffs.

Out East, I am sticking with my original picks from the bracket. That means I am going with Carolina over my Boston Bruins, who looked very impressive against Montreal. They are a deep team with great goaltending. Carolina’s got some depth too and that Cam Ward guy ain’t bad. Eric Staal has been great in the playoffs for them too. I just like the way Carolina finds a way to win and they have the go to guy in the clutch, Jussi Jokinen. I am sticking with Washington over Pittsburgh, but I am probably going to regret this one. If Pittsburgh can get its game clicking in this round, which it didn’t do consistently in round one against the Flyers, then I think they’ll win.
