It looks like Swedish goalie Jonas Gustavsson is going to wait until after July 1 to make his decision on where he’ll sign. Here’s a report from Sportsnet in Canada:
Jonas Gustavsson, the free-agent goalie from Sweden is going to wait until after July 1 to announce his decision.
Gustavsson’s agent Joe Resnick told Hockeycentral “It’s highly unlikely we’ll commit before 12 noon Wednesday. With so many teams potentially making major changes to their rosters, maybe it’s best to wait and watch it unfold first.”
I hope its this kids agent that’s telling him to do this, because this is just wrong. This could potentially hurt all the teams that he has “said” he might go to.
We should start a pool for what day in July he finally makes up his mind. I got 10 on July 8th.
This is the most convoluted logic I’ve ever seen. This kid is basically saying “I’m not deciding what team I want to play for until I see what those teams do without knowing what I’m going to do.” Doesn’t he understand that the approach any team takes with respect to the goalie DEPENDS on what his decision is to begin with? D.U.M.B. So what is he going to do now, sit back and wait until Dallas for example picks up Conklin for example, and then say “I don’t want to play for them, they just signed another goalie”. Wow, if this kid and his agent are that moronic, I don’t want him playing for Dallas. If he can’t decide that, how is he going to decide when to play a puck behind the net or not? Hey Nieuwy, go out tomorrow and sign a decent backup NHL caliber goalie.....
This is a huge deal for him. Plus, his moms just died. Give him some time.
The whole thing is crazy. I understand his mom died a month ago, but that’s not why he is doing this. I think we tell him to forget it and go out and get a goalie. Now.
On the flip side, think of it this way: holding out better improves Gustavson’s chances of signing with the Stars. Simply put, the Stars just have to sign one impact defenseman to be considered a contender. The Leafs have to sign 3 forwards and move Kaberle and bring in another defensemen or two.
If the Stars go about prioritizing the UFA defenseman first and sign him successfully, perhaps Ohlund or Scuderi, etc., then Gustavson has a very very high chance of signing with us because we will have the caliber of team where he’d be happy getting good playing time with a solid D corps in front of him and we’ll be in the playoff chase.
What an asshole. I guess all he is thinking about is himself. How about the team he signs with thinking what a prick he is for holding out for so long? Jackass.
