Brett Hull had some strong comments today about some of the anonymous player criticism of Sean Avery. Hull made these comments during an interview on Leafs Lunch AM640 in Toronto. Here is what Hull had to say on the issue:

“The team has struggled and it kind of irks me that players are trying to use Sean Avery as an excuse for their poor play. You put your foot in your skate and you pull that jersey over your head. One player does not make you play bad. You can have bad games, no question. You can individually struggle. When the whole group struggles and people try to pin it on one player, it’s kind of sad to me.

“If they ever came out and I found out who they are, I don’t know how to say it, but those are not people that I would want on my team, the people that use excuses for their poor play. Sean plays very hard for us, played through injuries, never missed a practice because of injury. The things we are dealing with right now are off-ice and not hockey related or game related. Those are the issues he needs to clean up in his life.”

Hull needs to listen. It’s not just the players going after Avery. It’s the owner, his co-GM, the coach, the league, the fans, and the media. Had Hull not been so busy shrugging off the problems until now, they likely could have quietly moved him along rather than having 2 months of everyone biting their lips. His personal bias and his bad read on Avery has given the team a black eye. Avery’s problems aren’t going to be solved by anger management counseling. It’s embedded in his character. I never saw any one player tag Avery with the reason they are losing games. What they clearly said is he’s poisoning the atmosphere in the lockerroom and clearly undermining Tippett. As much as Avery is over his head trying to be a Dallas Star, Hull is too in both bringing him here and not immediately cutting his losses. Those comments about his own players isn’t helping the lockerroom either.

Maybe Brett Hull is a poison with comments against ownership, the full coaching staff and the leaders of the team.

hull your a moron. you have no business being a gm in this league. sorry
