Swedes fall in OT
Another thrilling game for Sweden at the World Championship, but a different result this time around. Sweden scored with 1:14 left in regulation to tie Russia 5-5, but then fell 6-5 in the first game of the qualification round.
Neither Loui Eriksson nor Nicklas Grossman factored in the scoring. Eriksson had two shots and was a minus-one and Grossman was even and had no shots.
Johan Holmqvist started the game in goal for Sweden, but got hurt in the second period. Jonas Gustavsson took over in the second period and stopped 16 of 19 shots.
This was the first time I watched the Russians play, so I got a look at Alexei Tereschenko. Why the interest? He was a Stars draft pick in 2000 (3rd round/91st overall), the same year the Stars drafted Steve Ott, Joel Lundqvist, Antti Miettinen and Russian defenseman Vadim Khomitski.
Tereschenko never made it over to North America, but he’s had a pretty good career in Russia. He had 28 goals, 30 assists and a plus-41 rating in 55 games in the KHL this season. He is centering a line with Ilya Kovalchuk at the World Championship and has two goals and an assist in four games so far. I believe the Stars still technically hold his rights because of all the transfer issues with the Russia, but he’s 28-years-old at this point.
