I haven’t done one of these in a while, so here’s an update on former Stars defenseman Sergei Zubov in the KHL. He continues to play well for SKA. He’s played in 29 of the team’s 30 games, registering 21 points (5 goals, 16 assists) and a plus-8 rating. He’s scored three times on the power play, once shorthanded and once at even strength.

He leads the team in average ice time at 24:03 per game, leads his team in defenseman scoring and ranks fourth overall on the team in points.

The KHL site doesn’t break down league-wide defensemen scoring, but I believe he might be second or third in the league. He’s tied for 23rd overall in the league in points. He’s fourth overall in the league in ice time.

As for his team, SKA is tops in the league with a record of 19-1-2-2-1-5. That adds up to 66 points. Here’s how. The KHL uses a system where three points are handed out in all games. If the game is settled in regulation, the winner gets three points and the loser gets zero. If the game gets settled in OT or a shootout the winner gets two and the loser gets one. So, SKA’s record breaks down this way:

19 regulation wins = 57 points
1 overtime win = 2 points
2 shootout wins = 4 points
2 shootout losses = 2 points
1 overtime loss = 1 point
5 regulation losses = 0 points
Total = 66 points

And people complain about the confusing NHL standings.

SKA’s statistics are here.

Also, a picture of Zubov was featured on KHL’s website today:

And why didn’t Dallas re-sign him?

@ Matt; Why indeed! His health has been called into question these past couple of seasons and (unlike Jere Lehtinen) he wasn’t prepared to have his pay lowered to accommodate that on a new contract. It was such a shame to have seen him go.

I’m pleased he’s doing well though. Bit of a stab in the back for Stars fans but after being with us for so long, it seems the change is doing him some good. Go get ‘em Zubie!

Any chance the Stars sign him late in the season?

he will always be loved in dallas

thanks for that update! I don’t blame Zubie for going, but we sure need him! Can I say “I told ya so!!!” grrrr. Maybe Lehts shoulda gone to KHL for more $$$ (don’t! I’d really miss Jere smile. So while Jere’s getting the equivalent of hockey welfare, at least Zubie is getting some good play and hopefully, decent $$. Alley
