A different look at the standings

Here's a different way to look at the standings. It's based on points percentage instead of points. Based on this way of looking at, which takes into account how many the percentage of possible points a team has earned, the Stars are 9th instead of 11th and Anaheim is 11th instead of 8th. Minnesota is actually holding down the 7th spot and Vancouver is in 8th. Anyway you slice it or spin it, the race is still very, very close. With the Canucks points percentage of .531, the points pace for the final playoff spot is 87 points. I still think it will creep up to about 90 points as the season goes along, but we'll see.

Rk Team GP W L OT PTS PTS%
1 San Jose 45 34 6 5 73 .811
2 Detroit 46 31 9 6 68 .739
3 Calgary 46 28 14 4 60 .652
4 Chicago 45 25 12 8 58 .644
5 Edmonton 46 24 19 3 51 .554
6 Phoenix 48 24 19 5 53 .552
7 Minnesota 46 23 20 3 49 .533
8 Vancouver 48 22 19 7 51 .531
9 Dallas 45 20 18 7 47 .522
10 Columbus 47 22 20 5 49 .521
11 Anaheim 49 23 21 5 51 .520
12 Colorado 47 23 23 1 47 .500
13 Los Angeles 46 19 20 7 45 .489
14 Nashville 46 20 23 3 43 .467
15 St. Louis 46 19 23 4 42 .457

Mark - Can you recalculate and base the points percentage removing the first month? They’ve (Stars) been playing about the same hockey since then, that 1st month was horrid. If they continue on the points pace since mid-November, they’re (all teams) point % would be much different and maybe more accurate of current play. Just a thought.

“More different?” Really, Mark? Was that an attempt at comedy?

No, it was a typo. I changed it.

Andrew,

Actually, they were 7-11-4 towards the end of November so their play didn’t turn around until the end of the second month of the season.

They’ve been 13-7-3 mark since then for a .630 points percentage, which would probably rank them about 5th in the conference over the past two months.

Unfortunately, all 82 games count and they are going to have to overcome the first two months to make the playoffs.

A good way of looking at the standings. But Vancouver is both in 8th AND 11th spots? I don’t know whether to be relieved or distressed!

Though I guess the Ducks fans might be even more concerned at first glance… wink

Wow, the great Alanah of Kukla’s Korner & Canucks and Beyond. I am honored.

It’s not much better for the Stars, but at least they trend up to 9th from 11th under this look.
