An interesting twist on Ott
The league is probably going to take a look at Steve Ott’s charging major from last night’s game to see if there is any further discipline warranted but Colin Campbell, who usually handles discipline issues, won’t be involved. That’s because Ott nailed Gregory Campbell, who happens to be Colin Campbell’s son.
Campbell doesn’t handle disciplinary situations involving Florida players or Florida games. In fact, according to a recent New York Post report, Campbell doesn’t even get involved in anything related Eastern Conference contenders right now. It’s not because the league thinks Campbell is one of those parents who thinks his kid or his kid’s team can do no wrong, but because the league doesn’t want the perception of bias to exist.
Here’s an excerpt from an e-mail that that the NHL’s Bill Daly sent to Larry Brooks of the New York Post on Campbell’s involvement regarding the Panthers.
.“[There is no question] about Colie’s integrity and impartiality in doing his job, but we recognize the potential ‘perception’ of bias that might exist,” Daly wrote. “As a result, Colie does not (and has not since Gregory joined Florida) handle any supplementary discipline decisions involving any Panther players or any game involving the Panthers.
“He would also recuse himself from handling any situation that could be deemed to directly impact the Panthers competitively.”
The New York Post article, which was published March 12, is here.
Peolpe like Drew are the first to critizice a hit like that if it was against the Stars.! but since it was his team he thinks its OK, Ott, hit him blind side, unsuspectingly.. Team is shocked they have just lost the 2 goal lead in a span of less than 3 minutes and a lot of teams have a guy like Ott who will try to stir thing up to get his team going.. but this was definatley a CHEAP SHOT..!!
Before we all get all upset and mad at each other, let’s look at the big picture. The NHL has people that will look at this and make a final fair call. This is not 1985 where there was no clear look overs from several prospectives. These guys will make a good call, love it, hate it, it will be fair.
I dont see anything wrong with what Ott did. It is his job to be a pest and thats what we love Ott for. But my bigger thing is, how in the word was that diving on Ribeiro when he got high-sticked. It probably wouldnt have changed much but who knows? Robb in Missouri, Stars win the Stanley Cup in 2010

Ott shouldn’t get anything for that hit. The fact that he got a penalty at all was kind of a joke. Was the hit late? Very borderline at best. Really not any different than a thousand other times a guy “finishes” his check. He didn’t even hit him in the head or anything. Got him in the chest. Campbell was just oblivious to the potential for a check. In fact, what Campbell did near the end of the game when he went after Ott was far worse than what Ott did.
