NHL VP Colin Campbell was on Hockey Night in Canada Radio on Sirius this afternoon and the subject of Steve Ott came up. Campbell was basically asked if the league pays extra attention to a player like Ott, who plays close to the edge all the time. Campbell’s response:

“We have our eye on him to the point that we have hearing with him on Tuesday,” Campbell said. “Our eye has been on Steve Ott. He’s a repeat offender. He’s been involved in discipline. It’s not something we had to deal with right away, so we’ll talk about it. Where I am going to go on it, I don’t know yet. I’ll know afterwards.”

Ott has a phone hearing tomorrow on his hip check on Blues defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo in Saturday’s game.

Campbell also told HNIC Radio that he fined Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi for his hip check Jason Chimera. Campbell said he didn’t like the hit because he thought Scuderi went it too low and he saw it as an unfair play. He also noted that Scuderi was not a repeat offender.

You can listen to the full Campbell interview here. Campbell talks a lot about hip checks and his thoughts about what is seen as acceptable and what is not.

Yeah, I just saw that.  Doesn’t sound too promising, does it.

Sounds to me like he’s already made his decision.  Ott is in the same boat as Scuderi except he IS a repeat offender so on top of his fine we’ll see him out for probably 3 games.  Which is unfortunate because it’s been made clear that he is a bigger part of the team than anyone even the hardcore Ott fans thought.

translation: “ott is not a big enough star to get away with what should be a simple old school hip check, so we are going to suspend him”

how gay can the nhl brass get?
