The rumor mill: Turco
With the Stars being one of several teams on the playoff bubble at the moment and Marty Turco’s contract expiring at the end of this season, expect his name to come up now and then in the rumor mill. It’s shown up in a couple of reports today and both of them have the Flyers expressing interest:
There’s this from Tim Panaccio, the Flyers beat writer for Comcast Sporstnet Philadelphia:
Several sources say the Flyers have made inquiries into the future availability of Dallas goalie Marty Turco, who will be unrestricted after this season. Turco is still the starter in goal and has a whopping $5.7 million cap hit. The Flyers could not possibly acquire him without moving similar salary, but could swing it at the trade deadline if the Stars are out of playoff contention. Of course, the Flyers could be out of it, as well, if they don’t turn things around now. The Stars are looking for a top defenseman and again, the Flyers aren’t going to part with Kimmo Timonen or Chris Pronger, so this doesn’t make a lot of sense from the outside. What the Flyers need most right now is scoring help.
And there was this from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, who mentions the Turco stuff and says the Stars are in the market for some help at forward too:
With G Ray Emery sidelined for six weeks following abdominal surgery, Philadelphia GM Paul Holmgren has been keeping close tabs on Dallas G Marty Turco, who can become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
It’s not known if Turco, who has a cap hit of $5.7 million (all terms US), is being shopped around by Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk. The 33-year-old Turco has a 10-6-7 record this season, with a 2.45 GAA and a .917 save percentage heading into play last night.
With the Stars sitting in the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, trading Turco wouldn’t make any sense right now.
The Stars have been following the Flyers closely and Nieuwendyk has been scouring the NHL looking for a top-six forward.
The Stars moving Turco doesn’t make any sense. They are right in the middle of things and probably will be until the end of the season. As for help at forward, that’s interesting. The offense has gone a little dry. They’ve scored two or fewer in 13 of their last 19 games or so.
I hope they trade Turco. He makes alot of great saves but always gives up a goal that he should easily have stopped get what u can for him now and free up cap space
“The Stars have been following the Flyers closely and Nieuwendyk has been scouring the NHL looking for a top-six forward.”
Top-six forward? Why? As you said scoring has been limited of late but........
How bout a right shot that can score?
I would be totally on-board with Turco for a right-handed top-six forward but I’d rather get a top end defenseman.
turco is not here next year. people should get used to that idea.
but they won’t move him until it is clear they are out of the playoff hunt. which means they won’t move him and he will walk as a FA.
I would highly recommend trading Turco, Am I the only one that thinks Auld would do well? Why is that? Seems to me that he has what it takes, especially if he were going out there night after night.
And if you could, by some far stretch, get Pronger, What would be the hold up??? I would give more than just Turco to make that deal. Am I right?
it wouldn’t matter who is in goal for the Stars.. you’ll find something to bitch about.. Marty is a leader .. and look at the careers he’s saved by coming out and handling the puck on an average of 29 times per game.. lose Marty and what’s next.. exactly.. wake up people.. Marty is here to stay for another contract extension.. remember where you heard it first.. other words he’s not going any place.. believe it..
Trade Marty and start Auld? WAKE UP all you Turco (probably Weekly Romo bashers too) Philly would want to swap salaries. They would have to get back into contention first. Does everyone realize Auld had a 74-75-25 career mark. They are waiting on Richard Bachman to be the goalie of the future probably 2years away. Turco could re sign for a lot less in the off season. Lots of bashers forget he is a team LEADER !! Took this team to the conference finals not so long ago.
Not to start anything here but how many actual hockey fans are posting? Turco is an unquestionable elite NHL goalie. If you don’t believe he is, who would you rather have? Luongo? Fleury? Kippersoff? Are they really better than Turco? And I’m willing to bet many of you would jump at Brodeur because of his re-surgence this season but I’m also willing to bet you would be the same people calling for his head the past couple of years. Turco needs to stay right here in Big D. He’s an excellent world class goalie and he’s played his whole career for us. What we need is Defense - making passes, shutting down opposition offense and clearing lanes. Turco would thrive with good D in front of him. Again - how much do you know about hockey?
you are right matt, no one here is an actual hockey fan.
i just happened to google trade marty turco and this is where i ended up. funny part is i don’t even know who marty turco is.
good lord your entire post is just one big pat on your own back.
well done.
turco has been a world class goalie.
and i give him 2 good playoff performances,
02-03 he was out played by giggy who was playing out of his mind. but turco had a really solid performance, i don’t really fault him.
and 07-08 western conference finals, carried the team part of the way on his back. once again, well done.
but he is in the final year of his contract, 34 years old and he is coming off a career worst year.
and i mean abysmal.
yes his puck handling changes the way teams must attack dallas, i love him for it.
but he’s also good for at least 1 just absolute pathetic soft goal a game.
he may stand on his head for 15 of 20 saves stop the other four and let in one that my grand mother who is wheel chair bound could have prevented.
is auld the answer? no, no, no.
never said he was.
but turco is not going to be here next year.
money will be the reason.
no one was a bigger turco fan than i. i love the few times eh came way way out of his crease and had to body check an opposing player to keep them from scoring. loved it.
but he is gone, and do we let him walk for nothing if we are out of the playoff hunt, or do they get something for him.
because there will be a team that snatches him up for big money, he will play with a chip on his shoulder and he may very well win a cup.
but i don’t think he will do that here.
but then i’ve been wrong before.
so who is this turco guy again?

nooooooo we need turco right here :(
